MMA fans have let Jon Jones know who they really want him to fight.
The current UFC heavyweight champion has just returned to the gym after suffering a bicep injury that derailed a fight with fellow legend Stipe Miocic last November.
Tom Aspinall stepped in on late notice and won the interim heavyweight belt by knocking out Sergei Pavlovich at UFC 295, but Jones insists he will fight Miocic next.
On Thursday, ‘Bones’ suggested that he may skip a fight with Aspinall entirely as he asked fans if they’d prefer him to face UFC light heavyweight king Alex Pereira instead.
He tweeted: “Who would you guys want to see me fight the most, Alex or Tom?”
The post has reached 3.3 million people so far and over 8,000 have left a comment giving Jones their opinion on the matter – most of them want to see a fight with Aspinall.
One fan said: “Tom or vacate the belt.”
Someone else commented: “Tom. Silly question. Tom merks Alex.”
Another added: “Tom, Alex you are just going to take down immediately.”
Jones made it clear he prefers the Pereira fight in several follow-up posts.
“That fight after Stipe maybe the next biggest move I could possibly make,” he wrote on X. “This killer has already defeated so many champions, and is already considered a legend to millions around the world.
“The most massive fight the UFC could make. Give Alex a chance to avenge all those great Brazilian champions I’ve defeated.”
“It would be absolutely massive. A guy with a chance to be three division champion and a GOAT versus the actual GOAT. Same age, different strengths.
“No one can argue that that would be the biggest fight in MMA history. There’s absolutely no fight that generates a payday like that. Marketing would be insane.”
Despite being inundated with comments telling him to fight Aspinall, the American star claimed that no one outside of the UK is asking for that matchup.
“You actually think me fighting Tom would be more massive than Alex and I colliding? Tom only matters in the UK, newsflash,” Jones wrote in response to a fan accusing him of ducking Aspinall.
“Pereira is one of the most polarizing figures this sport has seen. Tom’s a contender who won a belt against another contender.
“We had to save Madison Square Garden’s main event. I’m thinking dollar signs, legacy, big picture here. Not what UK fans are dying to see.”
Aspinall, who has been relentlessly calling out Jones since becoming a champion, didn’t say anything but still had the perfect reaction to his rival’s latest comments.
‘The Honey Badger’ earned thousands of likes as he shared a picture of Jones pulling a funny face in response to the comment about him not being a draw outside of Britain.
Aspinall will fight against a yet-to-be-named opponent at UFC 304 in Manchester on July 27 before turning his attention back to Jones.
Sadly, Jones seems to have very little interest in fighting him.
