Canelo Alvarez and Oscar De La Hoya have now reignited their feud.
De La Hoya promoted Canelo until a bitter split in 2020, when the fighter secured his free agency.
The pair have exchanged occasional jibes since that parting, but have mostly just avoided one another in recent years.
However, there was an awkward reunion between them last month.
Canelo has now signed to fight Jaime Munguia in his next bout on May 4.
Munguia is co-promoted by De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, alongside Mexican promoter Fernando Beltran’s Zanfer Promotions.
While Canelo’s reps instead negotiated with Beltran, De La Hoya is still involved in Munguia’s career and so attended the first press conference.
There was no enmity on stage, but this changed once De La Hoya took to social media the following day.
He tweeted: “Yesterday’s press conference was so boring like Canelo’s fights. Wait till I unleash.”
Asked about this, Canelo has now told LA Times Espanol: “If he does not have the courage say it right there at the press conference – his own fighter Munguia is in the fight and he’s saying that about a press conference of his own fighter.
“I think it’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen in my life, and that’s what Oscar is.
“Oscar relies on nothing more than saying stupid things and that’s why people give him attention.
“But in his company he does nothing more than say stupid things, that’s all he does, that’s all he knows how to do.”
More back-and-forth is expected to follow before the fight on May 4.
Canelo was also asked about fans’ demands for him to fight David Benavidez.
“The truth is I’ve always fought those who people who people say I don’t want to fight,” he replied.
“I am in a position I have earned – where I can do whatever I want to do.
“At the end of the day I won’t please them with anything. When they wanted me to fight Gennady Golovkin, I fought Golovkin.
“Callum Smith, Miguel Cotto, Floyd Mayweather, Austin Trout, everyone.
“So if you look at that, they are never pleased with anything. I will do what I want to do.”
