Luka Modric continues to defy his age as he captains Croatia at Euro 2024 in what will surely be his international swansong this summer.
The Real Madrid superstar is looking to take the Vatreni’s World Cup form into the European Championship in Germany.
Despite a population of approximately 3.8 million, Modric and co. have reached two consecutive World Cup semi-finals.
Unfortunately, Croatia have never hit the same heights at the Euro’s but they’ll be desperate for that to change this summer.
Modric has anchored his country’s ‘second Golden Generation’ and famously skippered Croatia to the World Cup final in 2018 with his performances leading him to secure that year’s Ballon d’Or.
The former Tottenham midfielder is Croatia’s most capped player and remains one of the best in the world in his position.
How old is Luka Modric?
Modric was born on September 9, 1985 – celebrating his 38th birthday at the start of this season.
While long-serving teammate in Madrid Toni Kroos – almost five years his junior – is set to retire after Euro 2024, Modric is still going strong.
The evergreen midfielder’s contract at the Bernabeu was set to expire this summer but he’s set to sign an extension that will see him remain in Spain long after turning 39.
Euro 2024 is likely to be Modric’s last dance on the international stage.
However, Croatia’s coach Zlatko Dalic rejected the idea of his star man retiring following the draw for the tournament in December.
“We all know Luka,” manager Dalic told Marca.
“We’ll wait until June, see how things go, and talk to him. But one thing is clear, he never gives up.”
What has he won for Real Madrid?
Modric had already proved to be a serial winner for Dinamo Zagreb before moving to Tottenham in 2008.
The 174-cap international arrived months after Spurs’ final trophy win – a League Cup triumph over Chelsea – and failed to add to his silverware during his four-year stint in north London.
But following his £30 million switch to Madrid, Modric soon racked up medal after medal over the past decade.
