Moldovan judoka Adil Osmanov went from ecstasy to agony after clinching a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics.
The 24-year-old beat Italy’s Manuel Lombardo in the 73kg weight class to win Moldova’s eighth medal in Games history.
His epic performance on Monday came just a day after compatriot Denis Vieru also scooped a bronze medal in the 66kg judo event after emerging victorious over France’s Walide Khyar.
But things took a turn for the worse in freak fashion for Osmanov as he celebrated his bronze.
Overjoyed by his achievement, he dropped to his knees where he roared in delight, before doing a fist-pump as he let out his emotions.
However in doing so, he instantly grimaced having overextended his right arm, where he appeared to dislocate his shoulder in the process.
Holding his arm, he proceeded to rest his head on the mat in pain, as his opponent Lombardo put his head in his hands in disappointment.
Thankfully for Osmanov, he recovered in time to collect his medal on the podium, where he has since stated he was advised to have surgery on his shoulder ahead of Paris 2024.
While he also dedicated his success to his late father, as he said: “He dreamed of reaching the Olympics himself.
“He did not succeed due to financial impossibility.
“He dreamed that one of his children would reach the Olympics and get a medal.”
According to Moldovan news outlet IPN, Osmanov will pocket around £88,000 in prize money as a result of his bronze medal.
Moldova president Maia Sandu was quick to congratulate Osmanov following his victory.
In a statement posted on Facebook, she stated: “Congratulations, Adil! You made a brave debut. You fought with passion and were fully rewarded.
“Big congratulations to the coaching team and to all those who supported you.”
And Prime Minister Dorin Recean was also quick to echo Sandu’s thoughts with a statement of his own.
He remarked: “Excellent news from Paris: judoka Adil Osmanov brings the second bronze medal for the Republic of Moldova from the Olympic Games.
“Congratulations Adil on your effort, sacrifice, discipline and perseverance! The whole country is proud of your success!”
