Wrexham fans flocked to social media to bid farewell to captain Luke Young after confirmation of his exit from the club.
Young has played a key role in Wrexham’s rise to superstar status following the takeover of Hollywood co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
The 31-year-old joined the club in 2018 and went on to make 259 appearances, scoring 22 times.
Young was a prominent figure in Wrexham’s promotion back to the Football League last year following a 15-year hiatus.
He featured 25 times in League Two this season helping the Red Dragon secure a second-successive promotion.
But Young will not be part of Wrexham’s quest in League One next year alongside seven other players who will not be retained by the club.
Aaron Hayden, Rob Lainton, Callum McFadzean, Ben Tozer, Jordan Tunnicliffe, Owen Cushion and Dan Davies join Young in bidding farewell to the Racecourse Ground.
Wrexham offered its ‘sincere thanks’ for the efforts and contributions of the eight players set to leave the club this summer.
Reacting to the news, Wrexham fans were full of praise for the outgoing star with some supporters labelling the midfielder a ‘legend’.
One fan wrote: “What a servant to the club Youngy was, through thick and thin always played for the badge.”
Another added: “Forever a legend at this club. All the best for the future.”
A third fan wrote: “Nothing short of LEGEND. What a man.”
Another penned: “Of all the players released I’d like to thank Luke Young, his commitment cannot be denied. Will always be a legend in my eyes.”
A final Wrexham supporter wrote a heartfelt homage to Young: “My captain. Never let it be underestimated how much of a difference this man has made to Wrexham. He has stepped in when needed, stood aside when required, dragged us up by the bootstraps and carried us over the line. Diolch @8Lukeyoung, we are forever in your debt.”
The Welsh club also paid tribute to Young in a separate social media post which read: “259 appearances and 22 goals. Back-to-back Player of the Season Awards in 2019/20 and 2020/21.
“Twice winner of the Steve Edwards Goal of the Season Trophy, one Top Goalscorer award and our back-to-back promotion-winning first-team captain. Diolch, Youngy!”
