England are into the Euro 2024 semi-finals after showing that they can now deal with the pressure of a penalty shootout.
The Three Lions beat Switzerland on spot-kicks, scoring every single one of them to book their place in the final four.
Gareth Southgate’s side showed great resilience to save themselves in normal time and then great composure to be flawless from the spot.
They have now been involved in penalty shootouts in each of their last four knockout tournaments – the 2018 World Cup, the 2019 Nations League, the Euro 2020 final and now Euro 2024.
Here, talkSPORT.com takes a look at England’s all-time penalty record…
What is England’s penalty record?
The England men’s national team have been involved in 11 penalty shootouts in major tournaments and won only four!
That includes four in different World Cups, six in European championships and one in the Nations League.
The Three Lions lost their first-ever shootout – against West Germany in the 1990 World Cup semi-final with Paul Gascoigne’s famous tears.
Six years on, England won on penalties in front of their own fans to beat Spain during the Euros, only to lose four days later against Germany in the semi-finals again.
That defeat kick-started a run of five successive shootout losses for England including against Argentina in 1998, Portugal in 2004 and 2006, and then Italy in 2012.
England’s penalty record
World Cups
World Cup 1990: West Germany 1-1 England AET (West Germany won 4-3 on penalties)
World Cup 1998: Argentina 2-2 England AET (Argentina won 4-3 on penalties)
World Cup 2006: England 0-0 Portugal AET (Portugal won 3-1 on penalties)
World Cup 2018: Colombia 1-1 England AET (England won 4-3 on penalties)
Euros
Euro 96: Spain 0-0 England AET (England won 4-2 on penalties)
Euro 2004: Portugal 2-2 England AET (Portugal won 6-5 on penalties)
Euro 2012: England 0-0 Italy AET (Italy won 4-2 on penalties)
Euro 2020: Italy 1-1 England AET (Italy won 3-2 on penalties)
Euro 2024: England 1-1 Switzerland AET (England won 5-3 on penalties)
Nations League
Nations League 2019: Switzerland 0-0 England AET (England won 6-5 on penalties
It’s been kinder reading since Southgate took charge, having overseen a first-ever World Cup penalty shootout win in 2018 over Colombia.
England followed that up by overcoming Switzerland to secure a bronze medal in the 2019 Nations League third-place play-off.
But then the following shootout ended in defeat, with the Three Lions coming up short to Italy in the Euro 2020 final.
Missing the decisive penalty in that game was Bukayo Saka, but at Euro 2024 he has come full circle.
Saka scored from the spot as England matched what they did in 2019 and beat Switzerland on spot-kicks.
