What a summer Spain had. La Roja entered Euro 2024 among the contenders, but they were not one of the outright favourites to triumph in Germany.

Yet by the end of the tournament, Spain were kings of the continent for a record fourth time. And they thoroughly deserved their success too.

No one could argue Luis de la Fuente’s side had things easy. They were drawn in the so-called group of death alongside Italy, Croatia and Albania, yet Spain were the only team in the competition to win all three group games. What is more, they did so without conceding a single goal.

Georgia became the first opponent to breach the Spanish rearguard in the round of 16, as the debutantes took a shock lead in Cologne. But Spain steadied themselves and recovered to win 4-1.

Next up was a thrilling 2-1 victory over hosts Germany in the quarter-finals, with Mikel Merino notching the winning goal in the penultimate minute of extra time.

Another 2-1 win followed in the semi-finals, as France were seen off in Munich, before the same scoreline once more saw Spain beat England in the showpiece event to get their hands on the trophy. 

De la Fuente, who was not even a household name in his own residence before the tournament, has now won a Nations League and a European Championship since succeeding Luis Enrique, a manager with a much higher profile, after World Cup 2022.

As if that was not enough, Spain’s under-23a were also victorious at the Olympics in France, beating the host nation in the final to collect the gold medal.

The baton has now been passed back to the senior side, who will be looking to keep this positive momentum going in the Nations League. 

Spain will fancy their chances of topping Group A4, which also contains Switzerland, Denmark and upcoming opponents Serbia, although finishing second would be sufficient to advance to the quarter-finals in a rejigged format.

Serbia and Spain are among the teams set to take to the field on Thursday in the 2024/25 Nations League.

Serbia are out to put a disappointing Euro 2024 behind them. They were one of eight teams to be sent home before the knockout stage after picking up only two points in Germany, following on from another underwhelming showing at the World Cup in Qatar.

Even so, Dragan Stojkovic remains in charge of the national team ahead of Thursday’s daunting clash with Spain.

Serbia have been a top-heavy team of late and Stojkovic is an attack-minded manager, but against top opposition that rarely has the desired effect.

If it goes well, Serbia’s approach will give the European champions something to think about defensively.

If it does not, there is a danger that Serbia will play into Spain’s hands by being too open without the ball. Either way, goals should be on the cards.

Serbia did not get the right balance at Euro 2024, scoring only one goal across their three games.

There have been some significant changes to the squad this time around, with Aleksandar Mitrovic, Dusan Vlahovic and Dusan Tadic among the high-profile absentees.

This wager represents a slight gamble, then. Luka Jovic looks set to lead the line, but Serbia are without some of their main attacking players from the last few seasons.

It could still be worth a punt, however. Spain will almost certainly score and Serbia are capable of doing so in front of their own fans.

There are still some gifted players within the ranks and many will be determined to make an impression without Tadic, Mitrovic and Vlahovic around.

Spain will have to make do without Alvaro Morata for this one, but the striker showed at the Euros that he is a facilitator as much as a finisher for De la Fuente’s team.

Mikel Oyarzabal is a more-than-capable debut, while Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo and Nico Williams are all available to start in behind.

That quartet will cause Serbia no end of problems. Together with their talent, Spain will be in a confident, swaggering mood after their summer success.

Given they did so against Croatia, Germany, France and England very recently, It is hard to envisage a scenario where Spain do not score at least twice against Serbia.

That is especially true when we consider that Stojkovic is not a manager who encourages his team to simply sit back and hope for the best. Serbia will try to make an impact in the final third, but that could be to their overall detriment.
