Portugal will seek to seal their spot in the next round of Euro 2024 when they face Turkey this afternoon.
Roberto Martinez’s men were far from their best against the Czech Republic, but they did enough to seal a 2-1 win and set themselves up for this one.
But Turkey will also be eyeing a spot in the last 16, and they’ll get it over Portugal should they win this match.
The Crescent Stars overcame Georgia 3-1 in their opening game, meaning they are in the same position as Portugal.

Turkey vs Portugal: Team news and latest squads
Turkey could elect to bring another defensive midfielder into the side in an attempt to combat Portugal’s attacking threat.
Salih Ozcan and Okay Yokuslu are on standby should Vincenzo Montella decide to go down that route, although one man who will be starting is Arda Guler.
The 19-year-old scored arguably the goal of the tournament so far with a 25-yard curler against Georgia, and he will be looking to produce more magic.
For Portugal, Martinez went with a 3-4-3 against the Czech Republic, and he will probably keep the same team, meaning Cristiano Ronaldo will lead the line.

- Portugal have only lost one of their last nine group stage games at the UEFA European Championship (W4 D4), with that defeat coming against Germany in 2021 (2-4). Indeed, their last group stage loss in the competition against anyone other than Germany (defeats in 2021 and 2012) was back at EURO 2008 versus Switzerland (0-2).
- Türkiye would equal their most victories in a single edition of the UEFA European Championship if they win here (two in 2008), while only at the 2002 FIFA World Cup have they ever won more than two matches at a major tournament (4).
- Portugal made 30 crosses in their tournament opener against Czechia; the most of any team on MD1 at EURO 2024 and their most in a group stage game in the competition since EURO 2016 v Austria (36).
Turkey vs Portugal: What has been said?
Ronaldo looked a bit off the pace in the opening game and Gabby Agbonlahor thinks Martinez is scared drop him.
Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: “Pearcey [Stuart Pearce], honestly, I got hammered for saying it on social media but I was watching the game and I was like, ‘he’s not really the Ronaldo of old and they’re trying to cross it early just because Ronaldo’s in there.
“They’re trying to find him in the latter part of the pitch and get crosses in.
“But they weren’t really trusting him to play one-twos off… I just don’t think Ronaldo should be starting.
“Ronaldo coming on for 15, 20 minutes… You’ve got [Joao] Felix, [Diogo] Jota, who has played as a false nine before.
“I feel like Roberto Martinez is scared to drop Ronaldo. Is that going to be an issue later in the tournament?”
- Türkiye had the most shots (22) and the highest expected goals total (3.01) of any team on MD1 at EURO 2024. Indeed, 11 different players had at least one shot for Vincenzo Montella’s side against Georgia; a joint-high in the opening round of the group stage, along with Germany (11 v Scotland).
- Portugal midfielder Vitinha completed more passes under high-intensity pressure (59) than any other player on MD1 of EURO 2024, while only Toni Kroos (30) made more line-breaking passes than the 24-year-old in the opening round of the group stage (21).
- Cristiano Ronaldo has never scored against Turkey, despite playing three matches against them. Only against Albania has he ever played more matches (4) without finding the back of the net for Portugal.
- Hakan Çalhanoglu completed 88 passes against Georgia last time out; the most by a Türkiye player in a UEFA European Championship game.
