The biggest day in the Rowley Mile calendar takes place on Saturday as the 2000 Guineas pits the best of the Classic generation against each other.
The card features last year’s champion two-year-old City Of Troy, who is bidding to maintain his unbeaten record and confirm himself the outstanding performer of his age.
Our expert, Clive Gildon, has a trio of selections on the card including one in the feature race, one in the opener, and another in the Group 3 Palace House Stakes.

1.10 Newmarket – Heritage House
The big day kicks off with this Listed race (1.10) for fillies and the one who has been underestimated in the market is Heritage House, who takes a drop back in class.
She has been contesting hot races on her last two starts but ran well on both occasions, proving that her 100-1 fourth in a Listed race over course and distance last year was no fluke when running well back at this track in the Nell Gwyn. That came over a furlong further.
It’s possible that she wasn’t suited by the way that race was run as she seems best served by coming from a strong pace and should get that now that she drops back in distance.
The hood she wore last time has been left off and Heritage House can spring a surprise.
1.45 Newmarket – Noble Style
This ultra-competitive 6f handicap (1.45) is a red-hot contest that won’t be easy to win, but maybe it’s worth sticking with Charlie Appleby and William Buick, who do so well at the track.
They team up with Noble Style, who was sixth in last year’s 2000 Guineas on this card and a reproduction of that Group 1 form would give the selection a huge chance back in a handicap.
The problem is he has lost his way since and showed regressive form in three outings back sprinting after his run here last year.
However, maybe he will have been freshened up following a 272-day break and Appleby’s runners are usually fit for the first time back after a layoff.
Noble Style appears to handle any ground and might be able to defy top weight before moving back into Group company later this season.
3.35 Newmarket – City Of Troy
The 2000 Guineas (3.35) is the feature race of the weekend and it should go to the hot favourite City Of Troy, who has looked like an outstanding performer in three starts so far.
The son of Justify was a wide-margin winner of the Superlative Stakes on the July course here last summer and looked even better on soft ground in the Dewhurst in October.
City Of Troy made all that day and was no stronger than at the finish, pulling three and a half lengths clear of a strong field that included several of these rivals.
It’s difficult to see how any of them can reverse the places, especially with plenty of rain forecast. City Of Troy was well at home on testing conditions last season and the wet weather is only likely to increase his superiority over this field.
