Referee Benjy Esteves suffered a wardrobe malfunction during a super-flyweight undercard bout on the Devin Haney vs Ryan Garcia bill.
David Jiminez pulled off the upset victory over John Ramirez to claim the WBA ‘interim’ belt at 115lbs in the third fight of the night.
It was a physical affair that saw the referee have to wrestle the two men apart on more than one occasion.
During one such exchange, towards the back end of the contest, Esteves ripped the back of his shirt as he pulled Jimenez and Ramirez off of each other.
“And we’ve got a wardrobe malfunction on Benji Esteves, the referee has blown out the back of his shirt, you’ll see that when he turns around,” said Todd Grisham on the DAZN commentary.
Ramirez came into the contest undefeated at 13-0 but was handed the first loss of his professional career via unanimous decision with scorecards of 117-111, 117-111, 116-12 in his opponent’s favour.
Jimenez was the deserved winner as he outworked Ramirez on the inside of a scrappy affair that was messy, but nevertheless entertaining.
The early rounds were fairly tight but by the eighth, Jimenez was in complete control as he pushed the pace and battered Ramirez’s face into a bloody pulp down the home straight.
In the immediate aftermath, Jimenez said: “You know I’m a hard-working man from Cartago [Costa Rica] I come from nothing, it’s the second time I’ve done it [pulled off an upset].
“This is making history for my country, thank you to God, to my manager, to my promoter and to Golden Boy…
“My corner told me I had to work on the inside so that is what I did.
“I had an amazing camp in Las Vegas and they kept reminding me of what to do so I kept doing it.”
With that victory, Jimenez moves to 16-1 while Ramirez falls to 13-1.
Jimenez is now in a strong position to challenge for the full WBA world title against champion Kazuto Ioka.
Prior to the loss, Ramirez was ranked No.1 with the major sanctioning body.
