Snooker star Stephen Maguire caused a bit of a stir at the World Snooker Championship when he ate something from the table.
The bizarre incident happened in the 19th frame of Maguire’s quarter-final match against Dave Gilbert at the Crucible in Sheffield.
The Scot was looking at the table, picked something up between his fingers, and put it in his mouth.
Metro journalist Phil Haigh reported on X, formerly Twitter, that he asked Maguire about what happened and his reply was: “It was just a fly. I spat it out when nobody was looking.”
The 43-year-old went on to lose the match 13-8, with Gilbert going on to face Kyren Wilson or John Higgins in the semi-finals.
It is not the first time Maguire’s actions during the quarter-finals raised a few eyebrows.
Earlier in the match he slammed his hand against the table following a mistake.
It happened when he was 10-5 down and needing to mount a serious comeback to get into the semi-final.
“He can’t disguise his annoyance, his anger,” said Eurosport commentator Phil Yates.
“Why does he do it? One of these days he’ll regret it in a major way. Yes, show frustration, but not like that.
“I like Maguire’s passion, I just don’t want to see him hurt himself.”
Speaking after his defeat, Maguire said: “There was no way back after that first session, I handed the match over.
“But fair play, he played better than me and deserved it.
“I’m never going to just lie down, but it’s a day and a half I’d like to forget.
“I feel like I gifted it to him – and I hate that.
“There was no fatigue, it’s only a game of snooker.
“The 7-1 session is not good enough. If you lose 7-1 then you deserve to get beat.
“That’s just another quarter-final on my record, it’s not good enough.”
