Ryan Garcia is the new king of boxing after beating Devin Haney, according to combat sports reporter and podcaster Nick Peet.
On Saturday, the former training partner of Canelo Alvarez put on a career-best performance to drop the WBC super lightweight champion three times en route to a majority decision victory.
Garcia walked away from his biggest win to date without Haney’s belt because he missed weight, but Peet still thinks the boxing world is his oyster as people will be lining up to fight him.
In fact, the Fight Disciples co-host believes Garcia has usurped Canelo, Anthony Joshua and Gervonta Davis, who KO’d him last year, to become boxing’s biggest star.
“Ryan Garica, he’s the kingmaker now, he is the biggest star in the sport,” Peet said during an appearance on talkSPORT’s White and Jordan.
“So many eyeballs came to this fight because of the narrative coming into it.
“Oscar De La Hoya must feel like he’s got the lottery ticket and he’s hit the jackpot because a loss here [and] a loss for Jaime Munguia, who fights Canelo in two weeks, and Golden Boy are finished.
“They are their two marque stars, but they are back on top now with Ryan Garcia.”
The 25-1 boxer has called out Conor Benn and 6ft 6in WBC and WBO super welterweight champion Sebastian Fundora since outpointing Haney.
Peet insists any fighter would love to be Garcia’s next opponent.
He added: “I think he’s done at 140lbs, obviously he didn’t make weight for this fight.
“There’s obviously opportunities at 147lbs and there’s also opportunities up 154lbs. He can literally pick whoever he likes, whatever world title he wants to go for.
“I’ll tell you what, whichever world champion takes that call, they’ll jump at it because he brings astronomical eyeballs and astronomical pay-per-view [buys].”
For now, the 25-year-old will just be enjoying his victory and the estimated $50million payday he received after bumping up his fight purse with a big bet on himself.
Garcia will return to the ring later this year and fans will see was Peet is right to brand him the hottest commodity in boxing.
