Newcastle have narrowed down their search for a replacement for sporting director Dan Ashworth to two, talkSPORT understands.
talkSPORT understands that Crystal Palace sporting director Dougie Freedman is in the final two to replace Ashworth, who looks set to join Manchester United.
Freedman is already on Man United’s shortlist if a move for Ashworth cannot be completed, which has already been complicated by Newcastle.
As well as the Palace chief, the Magpies are considering a candidate from overseas.
Freedman currently holds the same position as sporting director at Crystal Palace where he has been a roaring success.
The former Eagles striker has been credited with some of their brilliant transfer business in recent years including deals to sign promising talents such as Michael Olise, Marc Guehi and Eberechi Eze.
Newcastle are keen to find someone to fulfil the role of sporting director before the summer transfer window opens after the season ends.
Ashworth is currently on gardening leave after making it clear he wants to join United, who have pinpointed him as their man to partner technical director Jason Wilcox, who signed last month.
