Kylian Mbape broke his nose during France’s Euro 2024 clash against Austria, it has been confirmed.
The French star suffered the nasty injury late on in Les Bleus’ 1-0 win over Austria which left him bleeding profusely.
The incident occurred when Mbappe went to win a header but ended up inadvertently heading Kevin Danso’s shoulder.
The French Football Federation [FFF] confirmed on Monday that Mbappe’s nose is broken.
The 25-year-old left the Dusseldorf Arena in an ambulance, but he will not need surgery.
“He has returned to the base camp of the French team,” the FFF said.
“He will undergo treatment in the coming days, without undergoing surgery immediately.”
Mbappe himself seems to be in good spirits as he posted on social media shortly after the game.
He wrote: “Any ideas for masks?”
The FFF added: “A mask will be made for him so the No 10 of France can prepare for his return to the competition after a period dedicated to treatment.”
It’s not clear how long Mbappe will be sidelined for but he’s likely to be a major doubt for France’s next outing, which sees them face the Netherlands on Friday night, live on talkSPORT.
Their final group game is then against Poland next Tuesday at 5pm.
talkSPORT host Jason Cundy does not think we will see Mbappe back in a France shirt until the last-16.
He told The Sports Bar: “Deschamps knows that victory has got them through to the knockout stages. They want to top the group, obviously, but he doesn’t have to rush him back now.
“The next time you’ll see Mbappe is in the Last 16. Why would you need to rush him back?
“They’ve got two games in less than a week. He’s not starting the next game.”
After receiving a lengthy spell of treatment, Mbappe was forced off the pitch, as is customary for any player who requires medical intervention.
However, Mbappe picked up a booking for re-entering the field of play without the referee’s permission – something that was a very deliberate time-wasting effort as he burst onto the pitch before slumping to the floor once again.
Reacting to the incident, Roy Keane told ITV: “He’s got an injury and he’s gone back on the pitch to try and stop the play, but he’s gone to sit on the pitch.
“I don’t like to see this, this is out of order.
“To go back on the pitch and sit on the pitch? He deserves that yellow card – I don’t like to see it.”
Such was the nasty nature of Mbappe’s injury, the Real Madrid-bound forward was replaced by Olivier Giroud who led the line in the closing minutes for France.
Despite Mbappe going off, it was victory for France with Maximilian Wober’s own goal giving Deschamps’ side the win.
This came after Mbappe’s run and cross was sent into his own net by the Leeds United man.
Fresh from agreeing his move to Real Madrid, Mbappe is hoping to complete his international trophy collection this summer.
After winning the World Cup in 2018 and the UEFA Nations League in 2021, the Euros are the one remaining international title that eludes him.
