Ivan Toney has given small insight into his celebration plans for if England win Euro 2024 – by getting a new tattoo.
Excitement is building in the England camp with the Three Lions one of the favourites to win the tournament this summer.
Toney is part of that squad that he says is confident they can make an impact in Germany and he teased that he may add to his impressive collection of ink should football come home.
On his tattoos, Toney told talkSPORT: “All the family ones are my favourite. I’ve got my sisters, my mum and dad, my children and everyone close to me so it’s like pictures of them and I like to get memorable pictures.
“When I was younger I wanted my first tattoo, I was 17 but my dad said I had to wait until I’m 18 and earn it.
“I think I scored my first goal for Northampton and straight after I asked if I could get my first tattoo and he said I had to get a meaningful one which is the one across my chest which says, ‘Suffer the pain of discipline or suffer the pain of regret.’
“That’s something I stand by very strongly and after that I haven’t looked back clearly.”
After revealing he has ‘about 50’ tattoos, Toney was asked by talkSPORT’s Faye Carruthers if there were any more to come.
He responded: “We’ll see, we’ll see. I’ll tell you after the final!
“I’m not too sure what it’ll be, but it will be a good one… maybe I have thought about it but I’ll keep it to myself until the end.”
Gareth Southgate’s England squad has almost an innocent feel to it with Toney, Adam Wharton, Marc Guehi, Eberechi Eze, Kobbie Mainoo, Anthony Gordon, Cole Palmer, Ollie Watkins and Dean Henderson all making their first appearance at a major tournament at senior level.
But Toney has been impressed by the youngsters among the England ranks, including Guehi, who Toney has had some challenging appearances against in the Premier League.
Asked which young player has impressed him the most, Toney said: “They’ve all impressed me, they impress me all the time.
“When I see them play they carry themselves so maturely. They’re strong young men and have a good footballing brain.
“Toughest opponent in the squad… I’m mainly up against the centre-backs, I’ve said before, Marc Guehi. Like, he’s so strong for a small guy. I think he’s one of the strongest.
“He’s a tough opponent, sometimes I drift to the other side where the other centre-back is.
“There are so many great young talents there, I’m sure they’ll do well for the team.”
While Toney is fully focused on helping England, talk of his future at Brentford will naturally hover in the background.
The 28-year-old has been linked with Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea in recent months but is refusing to get dragged into the speculation about him.
He said: “I’m a Brentford player, I have a year left. I’m going into a major tournament and that’s my main focus now.
“After this I’ll be going back to Brentford and I’ll be a Brentford player still.”
Toney added: “It’s nice to be linked with other clubs but I’ve had disappointments in the past and nothing’s done until it’s done.
“Like I said, I’m still a Brentford player and I’ve got to be focused on doing well for the upcoming season so that’s the main thing.
“If a big move was to come then I’d be ready regardless. But like I said I’ve got to remain focused and not let other things and other noise get the best of me and just focus on what I need to be doing.”
talkSPORT will have full commentary of every England game at Euro 2024, with their first match seeing them face Serbia on Sunday, kick-off 8pm.
