Conor McGregor strongly disagrees with those calling for Anthony Joshua to retire.
The former two-time heavyweight world champion was battered from the first bell during his shock fifth-round knockout loss to Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium on Saturday night.
During his post-fight press conference, Joshua insisted that he would fight on.
However, some people, including boxing legend Ricky Hatton, have called for the 36-year-old to call time on his career in the aftermath of his fourth pro loss.
McGregor passionately backed AJ to rebound from the crushing defeat.
The UFC superstar insists losses like the one Joshua suffered against Dubois are a part of the sport and shouldn’t be considered career-ending.
“AJ is number one,” McGregor told The Stomping Ground.
“This is his eighth stadium show here with Eddie and Barry [Hearn].
“He’s a legend forever.”
McGregor added when asked if there’s a way back for Joshua: “For sure there is.
“He had him. He smacked him back. He stood his ground and smacked him back. And then he went forward and got caught.
“It’s only boxing. You get caught, you catch someone.
“Of course, he can come back. For sure!
McGregor hasn’t fought since breaking his leg during a trilogy bout with Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in July 2021 – but he continues to be the star of every event he goes to.
This weekend was no different. ‘Notorious’ stole headlines from Joshua and Dubois after arriving for their fight wearing a bold shirt and holding a cigar in his mouth.
McGregor made the most of his ringside seat. The Irishman was caught on camera going crazy every time Joshua suffered a knockdown in the main event.
UFC boss Dana White recently delayed McGregor’s comeback until 2025.
It was hoped he would face Michael Chandler before the end of the year, but ‘Iron Mike’ chose to take another fight against Charles Oliveira instead.
MMA fans continue to impatiently wait for confirmation of his return.
Until they get it, ‘Mystic Mac’ is keeping them entertained with his wild antics.
McGregor certainly made Joshua vs Dubois a little bit more interesting.
