Hungary vs Switzerland predictions
Germany are widely expected to top Group A at Euro 2024, but the race for second looks set to be highly competitive.
This can be illustrated by the odds. Switzerland are 4/9 to qualify for the knockout phase, Hungary are 4/5 and Scotland are available at evens. In no other group is the lowest-ranked team listed at such a short price to reach the last 16.
Finishing second would be preferable to finishing as one of the four third-placed finishers with the best overall records. In theory that would produce a more favourable tie in the first knockout round.
That is why this match is so important. The winner would instantly take the lead in the race for the runners-up berth – or perhaps even more if Germany were to stumble against Scotland on opening night.
Switzerland are tournament regulars, having taken part in every World Cup and European Championship bar one since 2002.
They reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2020 (held in 2021) after stunning France in the last 16, beating the then-world champions on penalties.
Repeating that feat will be tough, but Switzerland will hope that their tournament nous gives them the edge over both Hungary and Scotland.
They did not set the continent alight in qualifying, however. The Swiss could only finish second in a relatively straightforward group. They amassed five fewer points than Romania and only two more than Israel, winning just four of their 10 encounters.
National team stalwarts Granit Xhaka, Yann Sommer, Ricardo Rodriguez and Xherdan Shaqiri are still around, with all four men likely to be in the starting XI this weekend.
Murat Yakin, the under-pressure manager, has not been able to regenerate the squad due to the lack of young talent coming through. Switzerland will therefore be reliant on some familiar faces on Saturday and beyond.
Hungary vs Switzerland betting tips
The winner of Hungary vs Switzerland will hold an early advantage in the race for the round of 16.
Hungary to win – 41/17 (VBET)
Hungary’s record of qualifying for tournaments over the last couple of decades is not as impressive as Switzerland’s. But unlike their upcoming opponents, there is a feeling that Hungary are a team on the up.
A failure to make it out of their Euro 2020 group should not be held against them given Hungary were drawn with Germany, Portugal and France in the first phase.
And while they did not qualify for the 2022 World Cup, they did perform excellently in the last edition of the Nations League, beating England twice and almost qualifying for the Finals.

Hungary are a well-coached team under Marco Rossi. They defend with organisation and discipline, with each player aware of his role and responsibilities in every phase of the game.
Hungary are a cohesive outfit and that could give them the edge over Switzerland. The bookies favour Yakin’s men in Koln, so the odds available on a Hungarian victory are very attractive.

Hungary to score last – 7/5 (bet365)
One of Switzerland’s principal weak points in qualifying was their tendency to concede late goals.
Given the conditioning at the highest level of the game, plus the fact that their players ply their trade for different clubs around Europe, that is likely to be an issue of focus rather than fitness.
Six of the 11 goals they shipped in qualifying came after the 80th minute, costing them a total of eight points.
Switzerland also conceded the last goal in six of their 10 matches. That is a very high figure for a team that qualified and whose group contained Andorra, Kosovo and Belarus.
Hungary, for their part, notched the final goal in seven of their eight qualifiers. They can have the last word here too.

Barnabas Varga to score any time – 11/4 (Sky Bet)
Barnabas Varga will lead the line for Hungary this summer. The 29-year-old represents Ferencvaros in the domestic league, and despite his age he only made his international debut last year.
The late bloomer has made the step up look seamless, finding the back of the net six times in his 11 appearances to date. That includes a brace in a 3-0 victory over Israel in Hungary’s final warm-up friendly.
Varga’s record for his country, together with a return of 29 goals at club level in 2023/24 (nine of which came in 11 outings in the Europa Conference League), means he will be full of confidence heading into this game.
The supply will come from wing-backs Loic Nego and Milos Kerkez, together with his two fellow forwards Dominik Szoboszlai and Roland Sallai.
Liverpool’s Szoboszlai is undoubtedly Hungary’s best player, but Varga will be their primary goal threat in Group A. If he is in top form this weekend, Switzerland’s unconvincing defence will be tested.
