As well as ending their long wait for some silverware, they also ended Bayer Leverkusen’s record-breaking unbeaten run.
Ademola Lookman’s hat-trick subjected the Bundesliga champions to their first defeat in 51 games this season.

Xabi Alonso has given his thoughts on the final defeat.
The Leverkusen boss told TNT Sports: “Absolutely. We did not plan on having a bad day today, but it was not meant to be.
“We could not cope with many difficult situations that we were preparing because Atalanta demand so much of you.
“One v one situations, duels, but we were not getting the ball in the right situations to take advantage. They do that so well.
“We were not able to come back and get that back. It was not meant to be.
“The unbeaten run has come to an end but congratulations to Atalanta, they deserve it, so nothing more to say.”

Granit Xhaka has said Leverkusen ‘didn’t care’ about their unbeaten record after they lost for the first time this season tonight.
“Honestly, we’re not interested in the unbeaten record,” Xhaka claimed. “We didn’t care about that from the start.
“It’s about the game and unfortunately we lost a final today. That’s football.
“We said yesterday that it would be a difficult game. Compliments to Atalanta.”
