England will be without one of their standout players at Euro 2024 for their quarter-final game against Switzerland this evening.
Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi has arguably been the Three Lions’ most impressive player in Germany and has played every minute.
The 23-year-old only made his senior international tournament debut during England’s 1-0 win over Serbia in their Euro 2024 opener.
But he has since established himself as the undisputed replacement for the injured Harry Maguire as John Stones’ centre-back partner.
Guehi required a half-time injection to manage a shoulder injury during the dramatic 2-1 win over Slovakia on Sunday.
The defender even grabbed an assist for Jude Bellingham’s overhead kick equaliser but he has been forced to sit out the quarter-finals.
Why is Guehi not playing against Switzerland?
Guehi will be sidelined against the Swiss due to a one-match suspension he claimed for accumulating two yellow cards.
Having kept a clean record in England’s opening two games, he was cautioned in the goalless draw with Slovenia before being booked for a second time just three minutes into England’s last 16 triumph.
Guehi received a poor pass from Kieran Trippier and was forced to make a rash challenge on David Strelec, resulting in a yellow card.
He did well to avoid another booking across the rest of the game but will sit out the game against the Swiss in the quarter-finals.
Under UEFA rules, two yellow cards in separate matches lead to a suspension in the next game.
Bookings are then wiped out following the quarter-finals.
Gareth Southgate will now have to reshuffle his defence for the first time against Switzerland on Saturday, live on talkSPORT.
Despite only having 14 senior England caps, Guehi has been one of England’s key players in Germany and his absence is a huge miss.
Southgate will now have to turn to one of Lewis Dunk, Joe Gomez and Ezri Konsa as his other centre-back options to partner Stones.
Kyle Walker could also potentially move to centre-back should he switch to a back-five, with Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-wing back.
Guehi will be available again for the semi-finals should England make it.
