Five England players are at risk of missing the Euro 2024 semi-final should they get booked against Switzerland.
Gareth Southgate’s side face the Swiss in Dusseldorf on Saturday, live on talkSPORT, after seeing off Slovakia 2-1 in extra time in the last-16 courtesy of Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane’s goals.
England are already without central defender Marc Guehi for the quarter-final due to the Crystal Palace man picking up a second booking against Slovakia.
Guehi will be available again should the Three Lions get through to the semis.
However, if any of the following players get booked, Southgate will have to do without them in the next round against the victors of the other semi-final, Netherlands versus Turkey.
Real Madrid’s Bellingham, Manchester City’s Phil Foden, Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo, Newcastle United’s Kieran Trippier and Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher are all at risk of getting a one-game suspension on Saturday.
However, any players that pick up bookings against the Swiss will not need to worry about getting suspended for the final should they get booked again in the semis.
Under UEFA rules, yellow cards are then reset after the quarter-final stage.
That means players who receive a booking in the semi-final will not be suspended for the final.
Bellingham avoided an immediate ban following England’s last game after gesturing to his crotch in the direction of the Slovakia bench after his goal.
Instead, UEFA have handed him a €30,000 (£25,000) fine as well as a suspended one-match ban, which will not be immediately enforced and is subject to a year-long probationary period.
The Three Lions have been boosted by the return of Luke Shaw, who has been named on the substitute bench and is available for his appearance at the tournament.
Southgate will change to a back-three formation against the Swiss, as we reported on Thursday.
