Switzerland vs Germany predictions
This time last year, there was a sense of angst among the football-following public of Germany. Ahead of their hosting of Euro 2024, things were not looking particularly rosy.
For starters, Germany’s recent track record at major tournaments left a lot to be desired. The Nationalelf, widely renowned as steely winners who were essentially guaranteed a quarter-final berth every two years, were dumped out of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups in the group stage.
They fared marginally better at the European Championship held between those two global events, but a last-16 exit at the hands of England in 2021 was another source of disappointment.
There were mitigating factors for their early elimination from the World Cup 18 months ago in Qatar. Germany went out on goal difference and were ultimately punished for a poor 20 minutes against Japan, in which a 1-0 lead was turned into a 2-1 deficit.
Yet their performances and results after the competition suggested Germany really were on a downer. In 2023 they lost friendlies to Belgium, Poland, Colombia, Japan, Turkey and Austria.
Julian Nagelsmann thus knew he had a huge job on his hands to make the national team competitive this summer. It is still early days, but the signs so far are that the former Bayern Munich coach has succeeded.
Germany have been hugely impressive up to now. They blitzed Scotland on opening night, running out 5-1 winners at the Allianz Arena in Munich.
The margin of victory was not quite as wide when the hosts faced Hungary last time out, but a 2-0 win sent them through to the knockout phase with a game to spare.
A draw in this match would put Switzerland into the last 16 too, while a win would see them overtake Germany to win Group A.
A defeat for the Swiss would also be sufficient for second place if Scotland fail to beat Hungary in the other game on Sunday night. Germany’s participation has already been extended, but there is still plenty to be decided in this group.
Switzerland vs Germany betting tips
Group A concludes on Sunday night as Switzerland face host nation Germany in Frankfurt.
Draw – 3/1 (Betfred)
Switzerland already have four points to their name and that should be enough to go through one way or another. However, Murat Yakin would probably prefer to finish second than third.
As for Germany, they cannot rest on their laurels yet. A defeat here would bump them down to second and bring a likely clash with Italy or Croatia in the round of 16, rather than a potential meeting with Denmark or Serbia.
Even so, Nagelsmann will be tempted to shuffle his pack a little. Toni Kroos and Ilkay Gundogan are in their 30s and may need to be rested at some point.

Elsewhere, Robert Andrich, Maximilian Mittelstadt, Antonio Rudiger and Jonathan Tah are one booking away from suspension. Nagelsmann will have that in mind too.
All of which could give Switzerland an opportunity to avoid defeat. A draw would be mutually beneficial and although there will not be any collusion between the teams, the odds are attractive on the score finishing level at Deutsche Bank Park.

Under 2.5 goals – Evens (Sky Bet)
There was not a great deal of optimism around the Switzerland national team ahead of Euro 2024, but the tournament regulars are on course for the knockout stage once again.
Provided they make it, it will be the sixth major competition in a row in which the Swiss have progressed from their group.
Yakin’’s team will try to make this a relatively uneventful game. That is easier said than done given Germany’s quality going forward, but there is little need for the hosts to create an open and end-to-end encounter.
Switzerland are a patient team. They controlled their meeting with Hungary on matchday one via ball possession, before a more intense encounter against Scotland a few days later.
With Germany looking ahead to the last 16 and beyond, this fixture could follow the pattern of the former rather than the latter.

Niclas Fullkrug to score any time – 2/1 (VBET)
One change Nagelsmann is likely to make is that of Niclas Fullkrug for Kai Havertz.
The two forwards have little in common but both bring useful attributes at the top of the pitch. Havertz’s link-up play and movement help get the best out of those around him, even though he is not always prolific.
Fullkrug is more of a traditional centre-forward. He is powerful in the air and a target for crosses from either flank.
It was only in the final few weeks before Euro 2024 that Nagelsmann settled on Havertz as his first choice, but he is no doubt keen to give Fullkrug a start at some point.
With Germany already through, this looks like the perfect moment. The Borussia Dortmund man will be determined to grasp his opportunity.
