Scotland open Euro 2024 this Friday night looking to spring a shock against tournament hosts Germany.
The Tartan Army don’t have the best record at the European Championship, but after an excellent qualifying campaign, they’ll feel confident of changing that.
Steve Clarke’s men impressively came second to Spain, losing just one match against La Roja away.
And after being drawn in Group A with the hosts Germany, Switzerland and Hungary, Scotland will be eyeing a knockout place.
Have Scotland ever made it to the knockout stages of the Euros?
Scotland’s relationship with UEFA’s international showpiece has been sketchy at best.
Since its inception in 1960, the Tartan Army have played in just three tournaments and have never reached the knockout stages.
The first was in 1992, followed by one in 1996 and the latest in 2020.
In that time, their lack of progress means that they’ve only played nine games at the European Championship.
Of these nine, Scotland have won two, one each in 1992 and 1996.
Across the three tournaments, the Tartan Army have scored five goals and conceded ten.
Their last experience at the Euros was a bit shambolic as they failed to win a game, despite playing two matches on home soil.
Scotland managed a 0-0 draw with England at Wembley but defeats at Hampden either side to the Czech Republic and Croatia saw them finish bottom of the group.
This time, the Scots are in a group with Germany, Hungary and Switzerland.
Three teams will qualify for the knockout stages of Euro 2024, so Scotland must feel they can finish above one of Switzerland or Hungary, with Germany expected to top the group.
