Germany vs Scotland predictions
And so it begins. Since winning the hosting rights ahead of Turkey in 2018, German football fans have been counting down to 14 June 2024 and the start of the European Championship.
Germany last staged this tournament in 1988, when they suffered a semi-final defeat by the Netherlands, who went on to lift the trophy.
As hosts they were also eliminated from the 2006 World Cup at the last-four stage, going down 2-0 to eventual champions Italy in a magnificent match in Dortmund.
Of course, the Nationalelf will be hoping to advance beyond the semis this time around, but anything less than that would be seen as a disappointment.
The bookies have Germany down as third-favourites as things stand, with their price having come down considerably in the last 12 months.
Pessimism abounded for much of 2023. Germany had suffered a second consecutive World Cup group stage exit at the end of the previous year. Then came friendly defeats by Poland, Colombia, Japan, Turkey and Austria.
The decision to swap Hansi Flick with Julian Nagelsmann was an astute one (although two of the above losses came under the new man), notwithstanding the former’s obvious acumen as a manager.
Friendly victories over France and the Netherlands in March lifted the mood, as did the return to the fold of Toni Kroos. The midfielder, who will retire after this tournament, makes the team tick and Germany look better with him in the XI.
The Nationalelf are certainly among the leading contenders to go all the way this summer. Home advantage only increases their chances of doing so.
At the same time, even German fans would acknowledge that this is not their greatest ever squad. There is talent for sure, but we will not know until the tournament starts how successful Naglesmann has been in getting his ideas across.
The former Bayern Munich manager is a sharp thinker and innovative tactician, but it is harder to coach complex systems and approaches at international level. Friday’s game will be our first look at his Germany team in competitive action.
Germany vs Scotland betting tips
Germany and Scotland will go head-to-head in the opening game of Euro 2024 on Friday night.
Draw/Germany half-time/full-time – 3/10 (bet365)
Scotland’s preparations for the European Championship have been marred by injuries suffered by Lyndon Dykes, Aaron Hickey, Lewis Ferguson, Nathan Patterson, Elliot Anderson and Ben Doak in the build-up.
Yet those setbacks will only have strengthened the team spirit within the camp, which was already a real plus point for Scotland.
Steve Clarke’s side were excellent in qualifying, beating Spain on their way to a comfortable second-place finish. Clarke has the team well organised and Germany will not have everything their own way on Friday, even if they are likely to dominate possession and the shot count.

Host nations rarely blow their opponents away on opening night. Excluding the pan-continental Euro 2020, the remarkable fact is that no host or co-host in European Championship history has ever won the tournament’s curtain-raiser by more than a one-goal margin.
With that in mind, do not be surprised if Scotland shut Germany out for at least half of this encounter.

Under 2.5 goals – 7/10 (VBET)
Germany were held to a 0-0 draw by Ukraine in their first warm-up friendly, before a late goal from Pascal Gross earned them a narrow 2-1 victory over Greece.
Three of their last five games have featured under 2.5 goals, and the other two were just minutes away from following suit.
It is understandable given Nagelsmann has only had a handful of games in charge, but there are still question marks over how cohesive Germany are.
That could affect how productive they are against opponents that will look to frustrate their rhythm throughout.
Germany’s superior talent should ultimately see them past Scotland, yet this is unlikely to be a high-scoring affair.

Florian Wirtz to score any time – 13/8 (Sky Bet)
Florian Wirtz is heading into the European Championship on the back of a magnificent season at club level.
Bayer Leverkusen’s extraordinary campaign, in which they went unbeaten on their way to Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal glory, was a collective success. But Wirtz was probably their standout performer.
The 21-year-old chipped in with 18 goals and 19 assists in all competitions, statistics which underline his importance to Xabi Alonso’s team.
Before 2023/24, Wirtz was not a guaranteed starter for Germany, especially as he suffered a serious knee injury in March 2022.
He will be one of the first names on Nagelsmann’s team sheet this summer. Whether Kai Havertz or Nicklas Fullkrug starts up top, the three string-pullers in behind will be Wirtz, Ilkay Gundogan and Jamal Musiala provided they are fit.
When Germany get the tournament under way against Scotland on Friday, Wirtz will be a key man.
