Erik ten Hag is staying at Manchester United and the there are some uncomfortable statistics that the owners have had to overlook with their decision.
Ten Hag will be staying at Old Trafford next season after Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the United hierarchy completed their end of season review.
Man United beat arch rivals Man City in the FA Cup final last month, but there was huge speculation that the Dutchman would be axed regardless of the result.
It comes amid a backdrop of their worst ever Premier League season where they set a number of unwanted records.
They make for uncomfortable reading.
- Worst ever Premier League finish (8th)
- Most defeats for Man United in a Premier League season (14)
- First negative goal difference in 34 years (-1)
- Conceded 58 Premier League goals – 15 more than last season
- Most goals conceded in all competitions since 1978/79 (85)
- Lost by four goals or more away from home three times since beginning of last season. Only Nottingham Forest did that more times
- Bottom of their Champions League group
Ratcliffe is in charge of football operations since his £1.3billion investment to buy 25 per cent of United.
And he has seemingly been doing his due diligence and held conversations with Thomas Tuchel and Mauricio Pochettino about possibly replacing Ten Hag.
England boss Gareth Southgate was also mooted as a possible contender, but they have decided to stick with the Dutchman.
United’s end of season review recognised the significant achievement of winning two trophies for the club, the Carabao Cup last season and the FA Cup this campaign.
Ten Hag also helped bring through the likes of Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho into the first team.
There were also several mitigating factors that the club’s hierarchy considered.
These included many key injuries in important positions throughout the season.
Plus the amount of time new signings, like Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund, took to bed in, while Mason Mount also missed a large part of the campaign through injury.
Ten Hag will be given the chance to turn things around at Old Trafford and will enter into talks over a new contract.
But the Dutchman will need to turn around those vital statistics or another review will be on the way.
