Tom Huddlestone has announced he will leave Manchester United this summer after a player-coach role with the youth setup.
Huddlestone was a shock free signing in 2022 after his contract at Hull City expired, joining United’s Under-21s.
The former Tottenham midfielder was hired as a player-coach for the Under-21s, where he played 24 times over two years as an experienced head among the club’s talented young stars.
Writing on social media, the 37-year-old said: “Today marks my final days at this incredible football club.
“Over the past two seasons, I have experienced remarkable growth and invaluable learning, both on and off the pitch.
“Every day, I have had the privilege of learning from amazing people, gaining insights into all aspects of player development and well-being.
“Entering an office environment for the first time was daunting, but from day one, I was made to feel welcome and at ease.
“I am and will remain forever grateful for the smooth transition.
“For any senior professionals considering a coaching career, I highly recommend taking on a ‘playing coach’ role for a season or two at the end of your playing career.
“This experience has been eye-opening, revealing the dedication involved in planning, executing, and analysing every training session, as well as meticulously preparing for the games schedule.
“These efforts are often taken for granted as a player, so witnessing and participating in this side of the game has been truly remarkable.
“I wish the club every success in the future. Special thanks to everyone in the academy, both players and staff, especially Trav, Demps, Nick and Macca, for affording me this incredible opportunity. Best of luck in the future.”
Whether Huddlestone will retire as a player for good and concentrate on coaching remains to be seen after his stint at Old Trafford.
He joined talkSPORT in January to explain his unusual role with the Red Devils’ youth team.
Huddlestone said: “My role is mostly training with the Under-21s. We’re down to the bare bones with players out on loan, players in and around the first-team squad, and with the Under-21s, you’re allowed three overage players.
“It’s mainly for first-team players returning from injury. It’s just to fill their numbers up, basically.”
Huddlestone was never expected to make any appearances for the senior team, although he admitted it was technically possible.
He said in January: “My contract is a playing contract! But I don’t think it will ever get to that.”
The former England international started his career out at Derby County before signing for Tottenham in 2005, where he played for eight years.
He then signed for Hull City for four years before returning to Derby in 2017, playing for three years and then re-joining the Tigers for a year.
United then snapped him up after his second stint at Humberside, adding his wealth of experience to the youngsters where he replaced Paul McShane as player-coach.
While Huddlestone’s future with the Red Devils is clear, there remain doubts over manager Erik ten Hag ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup final, live on talkSPORT.
talkSPORT understands that while Ten Hag has not been informed of a final decision on his future, Man United have not given the Dutchman any assurances – and winning the FA Cup does not guarantee he stays at Old Trafford.
