A fundraising page has been set up for a former WWE star left ‘depressed’ after being hit with assault charges in the US.
Grappling veteran 2 Cold Scorpio was a 1990s star who featured extensively during the Attitude Era, initially under the name Flash Funk.
Known for his elaborate entrance and dance routines, Funk was a high-flying performer who became popular with fans.
It’s the generosity of those fans now been called upon by a GoFundMe that’s been set up in his name, appealing for help to cover medical and insurance costs following a brawl that saw a man stabbed.
The former wrestler was working as a security guard at a venue in Kansas City, Missouri, when a row broke out with a customer over a whom Funk, real name Charles Scaggs, claims was smoking inside the venue.
TMZ reported the customer denied lighting up inside the store, but the verbal exchange would quickly escalate into a physical exchange.
Scaggs claimed to police he used a knife to stab the man in self-defence after a scuffle broke out, apparent wounds to the head, chest, legs, buttocks and abdomen leaving the patron bleeding on the ground by the time authorities arrived.
Despite his self-defence claim, Colorado-born Scaggs was put behind bars on charges of first degree assault and armed criminal action.
He’s due to face a court hearing later this month but, in the interim, is unable to continue his security work, according to the fundraising page set up by his ‘significant other’, Shirley Black.
Posting their version of events, she alleged the man who’d been stabbed had: “[Got] very aggressive and combative.
“By the time they hit outside the man attacked Scorpio, screaming that he was an MMA fighter. Mind you, Scorpio is an armed security officer.
“While resisting to use his firearm, even though he was license to do so, a knife came into play, and they both received cuts with the assailant, taking the brunt.
“When police showed up instead of allowing Scorpio the opportunity to press charges for being assaulted, he was the one arrested and charged with a felony offence.
“So now we sit here depressed and desperate; desperate enough to have to reach out to all our family and friends, his friends and fans. He’s a proud man and this is very hard for him.”
The initial hours of the fundraising page had raised $225, with Black adding: “It’s been a month, and the medical bills are rolling in.
“Scorpio had a severe concussion and had several stitches on his left thumb. Now he is having issues with his eyesight but without Worker’s Compensation Insurance and no Health Care Insurance, it just seems like there isn’t any way out.
“We are seeking contributions big or small, at this point anything will make a significant difference in proving Too Cold Scorpio’s innocence and getting him the medical care he truly needs.”
Scaggs wrestled in Japan and in the US for WCW and ECW before landing in WWE in the mid 1990s.
As Funk, he debuted at the 1996 Survivor Series in New York City – the same show that featured the first major wrestling appearance for Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.
Just minutes after Johnson, performing under the ring name Rocky Miavia, had starred in a victory for his team, Funk appeared alongside legends ‘Superfly’ Jimmy Sunka, Yokozuna and Savio Vega against Vader, Farooq and the ‘fake’ Razor Ramon and Diesel characters.
Later reverting to his Scorpio name, the now 58-year-old stayed with WWE for three years, later returning to the company’s developmental division and wrestling for the company for the final time in 2007 on Raw.
