WWE has renamed the SmackDown Tag Team titles, presented the champions with newly designed belts, and crowned new top contenders for the titles.
WWE CCO Paul “Triple H” Levesque & SmackDown GM Nick Aldis presented Tag Team Champions Austin Theory & Grayson Waller with new title belts on Friday’s SmackDown, with Triple H revealing that the former SmackDown Tag Team Championship will now be called the WWE Tag Team Championship.
In addition, new number one contenders were crowned for Theory & Waller’s titles, with The Street Profits winning a four-way elimination bout on SmackDown to put themselves next in line for A-Town Down Under.
Montez Ford & Angelo Dawkins of The Street Profits defeated Angel Garza & Humberto Carrillo, Akam & Rezar, and Tyler Bate & Pete Dunne in the four-way to earn the next shot at Theory & Waller. No date has been set for the title match to this point.
Friday’s Tag title rebrand follows a similar change for the Raw Tag titles on this past Monday’s Raw episode, with those belts now known as the World Tag Team Championship.
All of the SmackDown titles (Undisputed WWE Universal, WWE Women’s, WWE Tag Team, WWE United States) carry WWE branding, while Raw’s titles carry the World branding (World Heavyweight, Women’s World, World Tag Team), with the exception of the WWE Intercontinental Championship.
