McLaren won’t be in their usual papaya livery this weekend at the Monaco Grand Prix in favour of yellow, green and blue.
The British Formula One side has become known for having their cars covered in a shade of orange, but that has been temporarily dropped.
Even Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri won’t be in papaya racing suits, with those changed as well.
Why are McLaren using new livery in Monaco?
The reason is a touching one, and it’s a direct tribute to former F1 driver Ayrton Senna.
The Brazilian is widely respected as one of the greatest to compete in Formula One, and the colours on the car this weekend represent his country’s flag.
He sadly died in a crash at Imola in May, 1994, meaning it’s just over 30 years since he passed away.
However, he is still, to this day, McLaren’s most decorated driver, so this is a lovely touch from the team, especially because Senna won at Monaco six times.
And ahead of race weekend, McLaren CEO Zak Brown heaped praise on Senna.
He said: “His impact on McLaren is enormous, not only through his racing record but also his presence within the team, and now his legacy, so it’s an honour to race for him at his most successful circuit in his green, yellow and blue colours.”
Meanwhile, his niece, Bianca, said: “McLaren meant a lot to him, and together they achieved a lot of success, much of which he is still remembered for today by so many.
“It will be special to see it race the streets of Monaco, a circuit which gave him so much joy and many triumphs.”
