Mohamed Salah has started the season in style yet again, and the Liverpool talisman’s new celebration has left fans wondering the meaning behind it.
Salah has netted twice in as many games so far this season, including a record-breaking ninth opening day strike, as Liverpool have got off to a dream start under new boss Arne Slot.
The Egyptian talisman now has 213 goals for the Reds, putting him fifth in the club’s all-time scoring charts and he is closing in on Billy Liddell’s total of 228.
While Salah continues to take the league by storm, his regular yoga pose or point to the sky celebrations have been replaced by an archery style gesture.
And with Liverpool fans expecting to see it on a regular basis this season, talkSPORT.com has looked into the meaning behind it.
Why has Salah adopted the ‘archer’ celebration?
Salah has never revealed his boyhood club, despite hinting that he has always been an admirer of Liverpool teams in the past.
Many fans, including former Tottenham striker Mido, believe that Salah has now hinted at his allegiance and that his new celebration is a nod to Egyptian Premier League side Zamalek SC, whose badge contains an Egyptian pharaoh holding a bow and arrow.
Mido wrote via X: “The legendary Salah celebrates with the Zamalek logo, he will never forget Zamalek’s favour to him.”
Salah was close to signing for Zamalek in 2011, but decided on a move to Swiss club Basel instead.
This has left Zamalek fans believing the archer celebration is a tribute to the club’s famous logo as it signifies the link between bravery both on and off the pitch.
Others, meanwhile, has interpreted it as a spontaneous reaction to two very well taken goals so it will be interesting to see if Salah sticks with it this season.
Salah says that he hopes to continue this scoring streak throughout the rest of the campaign.
He said: “I’m always trying to help the team all the time.
“The most important thing is the team winning the game. I’m always happy again to score goals or give assists so I just need to carry on.
“We just need to play our football and enjoy our games and let’s see in the end.”
Salah has also spoken out about his future as he enters the final year of his current Liverpool contract.
He added: “Before the season, I was just like ‘I’ve got one year left, let’s just enjoy it and don’t think about the contract’.
“I don’t want to think about next year or the future, I just want to enjoy the last year [of my contract] and let’s see.
“The most important thing is to take one day at a time and just be grateful to be here.”
