Borussia Dortmund began the Nuri Sahin era with a win last time out, as Jamie Bynoe-Gittins struck twice to earn his side a 2-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt.

It was important that BVB began the campaign positively and they will now be looking to build further momentum ahead of the September international break.

Sahin is a popular figure at Signal Iduna Park, but it was still a gamble for the club’s hierarchy to hand him the reins following Edin Terzic’s exit.

After all, Sahin has no managerial experience before this job. He was part of Terzic’s backroom staff, but being an assistant is different to being the main man.

Of course, Terzic himself did not have any history of first-team coaching before he took over Dortmund, but he initially led the team on an interim basis before taking over full-time.

Managers have to start somewhere, of course. Pep Guardiola’s first job was at Barcelona; ditto Mikel Arteta’s at Arsenal. Both appointments worked out.

Still, Dortmund are one of the biggest teams in Europe and they would have had alternatives to Sahin. They instead put their faith in a club icon and the 35-year-old is desperate to show why they made the right choice.

We should not read too much into a single match, but Dortmund did well against Eintracht Frankfurt in gameweek one. True, the teams could not be separated in the first three-quarters of the encounter, but BVB created the better openings even before Bynoe-Gittens broke the deadlock.

The clean sheet will have pleased Sahin even more than the attacking performance, especially as it will take a few weeks before the squad is fully up to speed with the manager’s methods. If Dortmund can pick up several wins while tweaks are still ongoing, all the better.

There are still question marks, though, not least in midfield. Only time will tell whether Emre Can and Pascal Gross can play together as a duo in the engine room. All in all, though, Dortmund have reasons to be positive ahead of this weekend.

Borussia Dortmund will be looking to make it two wins from two in the Bundesliga when they face Werder Bremen.

Werder Bremen won promotion back to the Bundesliga in 2021/22, survived by finishing 13th in 2022/23, and then broke into the top half with a ninth-place finish last season.

It will be tougher to achieve another year-on-year improvement this time around, but Ole Werner is an astute operator. They use a 3-5-2 formation and try to play an exciting brand of football, with an emphasis on working the ball out wide and getting crosses into the box.

Werder drew 2-2 with Augsburg in gameweek one and they have enough about them to make this game competitive.

However, they lost both games against Borussia Dortmund last season, including a 2-1 home defeat in which they had a numerical advantage for the whole of the second half.

We expect Dortmund to once again have a bit too much quality for Werder Bremen when the pair lock horns on Saturday afternoon.

Their strategy of crossing the ball into the box could expose a Borussia Dortmund backline that is not overly convincing when it comes to defending such situations.

Set-pieces will be a particularly useful route to goal. Niclas Fullkrug joined Dortmund from Werder (he has since signed for West Ham United) and Werner now has a proper replacement in Keke Topp, a hulking 6t 4in centre-forward.

Werder should be able to breach Dortmund’s backline in this one, but we do not expect them to do so more than once.

Jamie Bynoe-Gittens was an unlikely match-winner for Borussia Dortmund last weekend. He did not start the game but was brought off the bench on the hour mark in place of Karim Adeyemi.

Sahin now has a big decision to make: has Bynoe-Gittens done enough to earn a first start of the Bundesliga season?

He might well have done. Scoring not just once but twice was a statement of intent from the 20-year-old Englishman, who joined Dortmund in 2022 after leaving Manchester City, following in the footsteps of Jadon Sancho.

Even if Bynoe-Gittens is not included in the XI, Sahin will not hesitate to call upon his services from the bench.
