Vasyl Lomachenko isn’t known for his power punching, but he does have an incredible ability for wearing opponents down and making them quit.
This happened in four successive fights between 2016 and 2017, as each of his rivals quit on their stools, but not Richard Commey, despite the Ukrainian’s best efforts.
When the pair clashed in 2021, Lomachenko put on a typically masterful performance, picking Commey apart over 12 rounds to win by unanimous decision.
He beat his opponent so relentlessly that on two separate occasions he implored Commey’s corner to show mercy and throw in the towel.
After Lomachenko knocked Commey down with a crushing left hand in round seven, just before the referee allowed the fight to continue, the Ukrainian turned to his opponent’s corner and asked whether they wanted to save their fighter, but they refused.
Moments later, Lomachenko had Commey on shaky legs once again, but instead of pouncing on his opponent, he once again gave the Ghanaian’s corner the opportunity to call it a day.

Since then, Commey has told talkSPORT he is slightly offended by Lomachenko’s suggestion that he needed to be saved.
“I was like come on, man, you don’t do that. I’m a man,” he said.
“That night, with the fight being at 135 lbs, I had a few problems, I was below the weight.
“So I wasn’t really happy, I was like come on, I’m a man, I’m a soldier, but it was a great opportunity to fight him.”
The former world champion bravely made it to the final bell, but ultimately he was no match for Lomachenko’s skills.
In terms of what Commey thinks makes Lomachenko so good, he said: “His footwork is so natural.
“He’s there but he’s not there and he’s small, so he moves quicker than you would ever think.”
Lomachenko will be hoping he can dazzle with his footwork on Saturday night when he fights undisputed lightweight world champion Devin Haney at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
“I want to beat him bad. I want to send him into retirement,” Haney said ahead of the fight on the Top Rank YouTube Channel.
“Loma has never been an underdog, this is the first time.
“This time he’s fighting a bigger guy, a strong guy, faster guy, younger guy.
“All odds are stacked against him and on May 20 I will show the world why.

“Whatever he brings on fight night it won’t be enough, I’m going to make him look average, I’m going to make him look ordinary.
“I’m gonna embarrass him and he won’t be the same.”
