Tottenham must sign a new striker if they are to improve on the progress made under Ange Postecoglou.
That’s what club legend Ledley King would love to see, who joined talkSPORT and outlined one area the club may target and build on their fifth-place finish.
When asked where his old club need to improve, he told talkSPORT.com: “I still think that we need a centre forward.”
Tottenham sold record scorer Harry Kane, who ended his final season with 30 Premier League goals, to Bayern Munich last summer. Captain Heung-Min Son scored 17 league goals, and Richarlison was behind him on 11.
“It’s difficult to find out who,” King added. “Finding a top, top striker is at a premium.”
He did, though, reveal goal getters he enjoys watching but reiterated the difficulty in convincing rivals to part with their strikers.
“I really like [Alexander] Isak at Newcastle but that’s probably not going to happen.
“I like [Dominic] Solanke at Bournemouth, Evan Ferguson at Brighton. Solanke’s had a good season. I’d like to see us get an out-and-out striker.”
All three options would be a welcome addition to Postecoglou’s side, with Isak and Solanke coming third and fourth in the 2023/24 league goalscoring charts, with 21 and 19 goals respectively.
Meanwhile, 19-year-old Ireland international Ferguson has been touted as a future star of the game, after breaking into Brighton’s first team whilst still a teenager, and scoring his first senior hat-trick in September 2023.
With Spurs favouring an all-out attacking approach under Postecoglou, a move to the capital could well be a tempting proposition for any target.
While the Lilywhites may have lacked a prolific goalscorer, they have not been short of creativity, with Son and Brennan Johnson each providing 10 league assists last term, and James Maddison recording nine.
And King argued that a focal point up front could be the perfect solution to his former employers’ defensive frailties, which have been exposed by their front foot style of play.
The former defender said: “We conceded a lot of goals but if we improve going forward then that takes the load off the defenders.
“If the manager wants to play an attacking style of football it’s as simple as that. The full-backs are inside the pitch and of course that’s going to create space for the opposition, but you have to create in your style.
“The more we can strengthen our squad to play in the manager’s style of football in terms of being on the front foot that will see us concede fewer goals.”
With the Tottenham boss reportedly planning a summer overhaul as he looks to guide his team back to the Champions League, it remains to be seen whether he will make King’s wish come true by adding one of his favourite strikers to the Spurs ranks.
