- SANDOWN
6.37: Hawaiian 10/11 (1.5pts)
7.07: Sweet William 2/1 (1.5pts) & Chesspiece 6/1 Each-way (1pt)
8.12: Kikkuli 9/2 (1.5pts)
Hawaiian
Owner Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum is enjoying plenty of success this season on the flat, in the standout yellow silks with black dots.
The owner has a 31% strike-rate this season across all his 75 runners and his two-year-olds on the turf have a 40% strike-rate which only further boosts Hawaiian’s chances alongside his great debut win.
That’s proven to be a better win too with horses in behind looking promising including Running Lion.
The colt trained by Richard Hannon won by a neck to Star Anthem, despite not going too efficiently as he ducked at the start which can always cost a couple of lengths.
He should go even better on his second start, under Sean Levey again and won’t mind if there’s still a bit of cut in the ground after Wednesday’s showers.
Sweet William & Chesspiece
Sweet William looked like coming back with a strong win at Ascot at the start of the month, but was only just beaten by Coltrane and Caius Chorister.
The John & Thady Gosden-trained star, who came second in the Ebor Handicap in August, has looked like a Group runner since then and it seemed like he might make a big statement on return.
Instead, he might have needed that run and potentially even running from the front again and his usual rider Rab Havlin is on board again and always gets a good tune out of the now five-year-old by Sea The Stars.
Sweet William looked well beaten coming into the final furlong but he did well to eat up a lot of ground to cut the deficit in third.
Chesspiece was fifth behind Hamish on his return to the track in April, which was also his first run since being gelded.
But he might be value each-way alongside a bet on Sweet William to go for a bit of spread betting on this great race.
William Buick and Charlie Appleby have an incredible record at Sandown, spanning over the last few years and he’s shown great promise over 1m6f and shorter, so can’t be ruled out upped to 2m.

Kikkuli
Juddmonte always do well at Sandown as a general rule, they’re currently leading the owners in winners here this season and have 9 wins from 30 runs in the last five years, second only to Godolphin.
Kikkuli represents their runner in the Heron Stakes – a 9/2 shot behind Ice Max for Karl Burke who already has an established rating of 109.
Ryan Moore also takes the mount on the Kingman colt after beating Creative Story by a neck at Newmarket back in April.
Kikkuli won the maiden contest in a three-way go for the line, also featuring the 80/1 Usuario Amigo.
But it was how he looked beaten in the final 100 yards as he hung right a touch, with Creative Story looking like he was going to swoop past, but Kikkuli held on well to keep pushing and beat the Godolphin horse.
After all, Kikkuli is Frankel’s half brother and there’s a fair bit of promise from this Harry Charlton-trained three-year-old.
A step up in trip is going to be a positive for the Kingman colt and should be an interesting bet at 9/2 regardless of the outcome.
