Mike Tyson is fully behind Dana White’s potential move into boxing.
The UFC president is currently working with Irish super welterweight prospect Callum Walsh but is planning on making a big splash in boxing soon.
White entered the boxing sphere in 2017 by co-promoting Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor while the Irishman was still under contract with the UFC.
The fight generated more than $600million and was a raving success.
Now, White is hoping to commit to the sport long term.
“There will be some big announcements,” White said.
“If you know anything about me and you go back and look at anything I ever said – I never say anything that I don’t do, ever. I’ve never said.
“We’ve been kicking the boxing thing around for a long time and you’ve never heard me commit and say, ‘I’m in’. I’m in.”
Former undisputed heavyweight champion Tyson thinks White’s impending foray into the sport could change the game entirely.
“That’s going to be the best thing to happen to boxing, just like UFC,” he told the Come and Talk 2 Me podcast.
“If you’re in UFC, and if anybody’s booing the fight, you’re not going to see that guy.
“His next fight is going to be in South Dakota somewhere. Only good fights.
“If you don’t have a good fight, you ain’t never going to see that guy again.”
White has shown time and time again he isn’t a fan of the less fan-friendly fighters.
Jared Rosholt and Jake Shields both had great records in the UFC but their grappling-heavy styles combined with a lack of finishes led to them being released by White.
We have also seen fighters with less exciting approaches take considerably longer to get to the top, such as Leon Edwards, who was a very low-output striker on the come-up.
It took an excruciating 12-fight winning streak and several fighters jumping ahead of him in the queue before the Brit got a shot at UFC welterweight gold.
When he did, he scored one of the most dramatic last-gasp knockout victories in the sport’s history over Kamaru Usman.
So, it all worked out in the end.
