The 2024 Open Championship will take place at Royal Troon this week as golf’s best battle it out in the final major of the summer.

The first three majors this year have all produced huge drama and now the famous Scottish links will test an all-star field.

Brian Harman is the current Open champion following his dominant win at Royal Liverpool Golf Club last year.

He will return the Claret Jug on Monday morning before trying to win it again in Troon.

Rory McIlroy will be among the favourites for glory following his latest major heartbreak at the recent US Open.

McIlroy lost on the final hole at Pinehurst as Bryson DeChambeau clinched glory.

Also in the mix will be Masters champion Scottie Scheffler, PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele and 15-time major winner Tiger Woods.

The Open 2024: Dates and how to follow

The 152nd edition of The Open is being held from Thursday, July 18 to Sunday, July 21.

It is taking place at Royal Troon’s Old Course in South Ayrshire, Scotland.

Play will get going at 7am on the opening two days and at 8:30am over the weekend.

The Open 2024: Field and tee times

The field will be made up of 156 players before the cut on Friday night.

The world’s top trio of McIlroy, Scheffler and Schauffele will be among the favourites.

LIV Golf stars DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka will be eyeing glory while Jon Rahm is fit again after missing the US Open with a foot injury.

Tiger Woods is expected to tee it up in what could be his final Open.

Open qualifying concluded earlier this month with a host of players around the world battling it out to make it.

Major winner Justin Rose came through qualifying at Burnham and Berrow in Somerset but the likes of Sergio Garcia, Graeme McDowell and Branden Grace missed out.

Ewen Ferguson won the BMW International Open in Munich and Davis Thompson won the John Deere Classic in Illinois at the start of July to secure their places in Troon.

England’s Richard Mansell and Aaron Rai produced stunning finishes at the Scottish Open last weekend to book the final spots.

The full field has now been confirmed and can be found here while the opening round tee times and groupings will be announced on Tuesday.

The total prize fund for The Open will be $16.5million while the winner’s share will be a cool $3m.

The Open 2024: Course details

The Open Championship has been held at Troon on nine occasions with Sweden’s Henrik Stenson winning a thriller last time out in 2016.

Designed by George Strath and Willie Fernie in 1888 and renovated by James Braid in 1923, Troon’s Old Course follows a traditional out-and-back manner like the Old Course at St Andrews.

It will play to a par-71 and a maximum of 7,190 yards this year.

Troon boosts one of the most famous holes in world golf – the par-3 eighth ‘Postage Stamp’.

The iconic hole, famed for its tiny green, could play as short as 99 yards.

At the other end of the scale, this tournament will include the longest hole in Open history with the par-5 sixth hole ‘Turnberry’ set to measure 623 yards.

Troon includes a classic major finishing run with a gettable par-5 followed by a tough par-3 and a wonderful par-4 to finish.

The Open 2024: What has been said?

Harman was the surprise winner at a rain-soaked Open at Hoylake last July.

‘The Butcher’ overcame an early wobble in his final round to stroll to his first major title.

He said: “I’m over the moon. It was a tough last three days, really was.

“Being able to get some sleep was big overnight. Sleeping on a lead like that is really difficult, so glad of the way I hung in there.

“I knew I had a six-shot lead on the 18th, I was ready to putt it down that fairway.

“To get it done on the biggest stage, it’s what you dream about as a kid.

“I’ve always thought about holding this trophy. From my cold, dead fingers it is going to be tough to get it out of my hands.

“I couldn’t be happier to be the champion. To all the fans, all the nice words, and all the fans back home tooting me on I appreciate it so much. Thank you.”
