The Toronto Maple Leafs tanked an entire season to give them the best chance to get Auston Matthews. And since then, all Matthews has done is become one of the best goal-scorers in the world.
The Leafs are a better team with Matthews. Full stop. But, as they did Tuesday night in a decisive 4-0 win over the Boston Bruins Tuesday night, they proved that not having him in their lineup every night is not an apocalyptic development.
The Leafs scored three power-play goals against the Bruins, almost doubling their total for the season. They killed all six Boston power plays.
