Nick Kyrgios‘ latest public outburst comes in relation to an award that was handed out to Ashleigh Barty instead of himself.
Barty has been awarded the Newcombe Medal which recognizes the best tennis player of the year in Australia.
“I get no respect at all, I don’t give a f*ck,” Kyrgios wrote on social media alongside a comparison of his and Barty‘s tournament and match wins in 2022.
Barty retired in March as No.1 on the WTA tour and shortly after winning the Australian Open.
The win ended a 44-year streak without an Australian singles winner at this Grand Slam. “It’s an incredible way to cap what has been an incredible journey,” said Barty as she collected the Newcombe Medal for the fifth time in her career.
Kyrgios, Ajla Tomljanovic (after reaching the quarter-finals with three grand slams), Alex de Minaur, Wimbledon doubles champions Matt Ebden and Max Purcell and Storm Sanders were the other nominees for Tennis Australia’s annual award.
Shortly afterwards, Kyrgios interacted again on his social media when it was made official that the ATP was awarding him and Thanasi Kokkinakis as the best doubles pair of the year. “Obviously,” Kyrgios wrote.
Barty was the second Australian tennis player to be ranked No.1 in the world in singles by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), holding the ranking for 121 weeks overall.
She was also a top-10 player in doubles, having achieved a career-high ranking of No.5 in the world. Barty is a three-time Grand Slam singles champion and the reigning champion at the Australian Open.
She is also a major doubles champion, having won the 2018 US Open with CoCo Vandeweghe. Barty won 15 singles titles and 12 doubles titles on the WTA Tour.
