Rosie Eccles met tennis legend Andy Murray at the Paris Olympics who helped provide a stunning gift.
Eccles was eliminated by Aneta Rygielska on the judges’ scorecards in her very first fight at the games, being left in tears in the ring with many believed she’d been ‘robbed’.
The Welsh star stayed in the Olympic Village in Paris alongside a star-studded Team GB line-up which included tennis legend Murray, who was competing in the men’s doubles.
It was his final ever appearance on the court after announcing his retirement from the sport, where he thrilled fans alongside partner Dan Evans.
And Welsh star Eccles has revealed that she was then gifted the opportunity to watch their miraculous comeback win over Belgium at Roland Garros live.
She told talkSPORT.com: “I’ve always admired Andy Murray and Mark Cavendish. I actually met both.
“But Andy I obviously met him, he has had things similar to myself in terms of lots of setbacks and lots of injuries.
“He fights for every point and I am very similar in the ring. But I met him and they actually sorted me out tickets.
“I actually went to the doubles match against Belgium, the one before they lost, it was incredible.
“I was right at the front and it was incredible to watch it live. They fought like hell to win.
“It was one of the experiences from the Olympics that I will never forget it was amazing.”
Eccles then added that she got to speak and meet cycling legend Cavendish.
She added: “I even had the chance to have a small chat with Cavendish after a Team GB speech he gave.
“Again a massive fan of the way he has carried himself through adversity. If you had said two people I would have met, it was mental.
“Both genuine and humble people in the flesh.”
It ended in heartache for Murray eventually, who crashed out to the USA in the quarter-finals after incredible brave performances alongside Evans.
It was a curtain-call on the three-time Grand Slam winner’s career, who had already picked up gold twice at London 2012 and Rio 2016 in the singles competition.
He retired holding an incredible legacy in the sport, and as a prominent figure in the Team GB Olympic camp.
Eccles suffered heartbreak in her own pursuit of gold, but showed real bravery and talent on the big stage, before ultimately being let down by factors beyond her control.
It was a disappointing boxing campaign for Team GB who finished with just one bronze medal which was picked up by Lewis Richardson.
But officials on the team were not impressed with the number of decisions that wen against them including Eccles’ fight, and the fall of super-heavyweight Delicious Orie.
