2.25 Newmarket – Silver Lady
The Group 2 Dahlia Stakes is a muddling affair with the quirky Running Lion heading the early betting.
Just how ready she will be first time out is the question, and a chance is taken on the highly regarded Silver Lady, who produced a career best on her last start 107 days ago when capturing a Meydan Group 2.
Silver Lady is among the most lightly raced fillies in here after only five runs, and she is starting to deliver on the earlier hype (sent off favourite for two strong Listed races on her second and third starts).
The way she downed an odds-on stablemate last time was impressive and this race should be run to suit with pace angle Astral Beau in the field. She makes enough appeal to get involved, even with a 3lb penalty to carry.
3.00 Newmarket – Bague D’or
A tricky 1m6f handicap follows the Dahlia and a chance is taken on Bague D’or for James Ferguson.
Bague D’or is making his seasonal return, but goes really well fresh (form figures of 2211 following breaks of 85 days or more) and can pick up where he left off for Ferguson after showing steady progression throughout his career – and again last term after joining this trainer.
He also goes well at Newmarket (course form figures of 211) and he is quite lightly raced for a six-year-old, so could feasibly improve again.
Mikael Barzalona is an eye-catching jockey booking and his first ride for Ferguson can be a winning one aboard this proven stayer.
3.40 Newmarket – Ramatuelle
The French could be in for a good day as Ramatuelle is also of interest in the feature 1000 Guineas.
Ramatuelle was best known as a sprinter at two as she landed the Prix Robert Papin before only giving best to the top-class Vandeek in the Group 1 Prix Morny.
However, trainer Christopher Head clearly sees her as a prospective miler and she went some way to justifying that impression with a staying-on second over 7f in the Prix Imprudence on her comeback.
That is a popular Classic trial in France and it is expected that Head has left plenty to work on with Newmarket in mind.
Providing they don’t go too hard, this classy filly might possess a little too much toe for the more stoutly bred types.
This is an open running and she appeals as one who could shorten in the betting.
