The second day of Haydock’s Sprint Cup meeting takes centre stage on Friday
Day two of the Haydock Park Sprint Cup meeting features some competitive racing, including five handicaps that look tough to decipher.
The card includes a Class 2 novice for fillies and a Class 3 handicap, among a seven-race jamboree.
Our expert, Clive Gildon, has a trio of selections on the card including one in the big handicap of the day, one in the second race and a horse who loves Haydock.

2.00 Haydock – Grace Angel
There is a lot to like about Grace Angel is this 5f handicap. She recorded a career-best effort when winning over course and distance last June and is now racing off 5lb lower.
The Darryll Holland-trained four-year-old lost her way after that victory, but has returned from a break and wind surgery in good form this summer and followed her fourth at Chester in July with a comfortable victory at Brighton in August. She runs off only 4lb higher here.
Grace Angel was well held when turned out quickly under a penalty at Windsor in a Racing League event last month, but was 1lb wrong at the weights that day and made most of the running before fading in the closing stages.
That proves she still has plenty of spark and the return to the scene of her best effort might do the trick off a mark 1lb lower than last time.
3.45 Haydock – Billy No Mates
There is no doubt that Haydock suits Billy No Mates and the eight-year-old is fancied to make it four wins from six starts at the course and repeat his 2020 victory in this race.
Billy No Mates is 2lb lower than when recording his last victory at this course nearly 12 months ago and this will be his first visit to the track this season.
He showed he retains plenty of ability when running well on a couple of occasions in the spring. The Michael Dods representative was a close second on heavy ground at Pontefract in April and lost out by only two and a half lengths when fifth at Doncaster in May off 5lb higher than this.
Billy No Mates returned to form with a better effort than it looked on paper at York last time. He was beaten only three and a quarter lengths, despite finishing ninth of 11, and that is enough to sugest that he is capable of striking back at Haydock after 56 days off.
4.20 Haydock – Tanmawwy
The handicapper has dropped Tanmawwy quickly down the weights this year and the six-year-old took full advantage when winning a 7f handicap at Epsom 11 days ago.
Tanmawwy had shaped like he was on his way back to form when finishing fourth in a Racing League event at Chepstow on his previous start and confirmed that promise with that victory.
He is 2lb wrong in the weights now that he has been turned out quickly following that win, but the time he recorded at Epsom was quick for the grade and he has been rated higher.
Before his win at Epsom, Tanmawwy’s previous victory had been achieved off a mark of 97 and he could evidently still be thrown in from a mark of just 81 here.
He won a novice at this course in 2020 by four and a half lengths, so handles the track, and has an outstanding chance of following up.
