Saturday’s tips
1.50 Goodwood – 1m4f Glorious Stakes (Group 3)
You could make a case for all five runners in the Glorious Stakes, but the suspicion is this might set up nicely for Lion’s Pride and it’s unlikely we’ve seen the best of him.
Despite being a half-brother to Gold Cup winner Courage Mon Ami, Lion’s Pride has been campaigned at 1m2f on both starts this season. He was set a stiff task under a penalty at Kempton in the first of those behind subsequent Group 1 winner Dubai Honour and the smart Okeechobee.
The selection looked in need of further next time out in the Gala Stakes at Sandown when easing conditions would have been against him and it is worth remembering how easily he beat esteemed stablemate Middle Earth at this time last year.
Getting back over 1m4f on fast ground should suit him ideally and he can take another step forward.
Selection: Lion’s Pride
3.00 Goodwood – 1m6f Qatar Lillie LangtryStakes (Group 2)
Free Wind could have a complete class edge in the Lillie Langtry Stakes and gets a confident vote.
She was admittedly put in her place when turned over at much shorter odds last year, but you can ignore that as the ground was desperate and the surface will be what she wants here.
Free Wind’s second to Bluestocking in the Middleton Stakes over a trip that is too sharp on her return reads well with the winner going on to land a Group 1 and finish second in the King George.
This daughter of Galileo has an excellent record when fresh and won’t mind the subsequent 79-day break. She can take this before stepping back up to the highest level, having gone close in the Yorkshire Oaks nearly a year ago.
Selection: Free Wind
3.35 Goodwood – 6f Stewards’ Cup (Heritage Handicap)
The Gosdens and Kieran Shoemark could be in for a big closing day at Goodwood as Godolphin sprinter Cover Up also has a chance in the Stewards’ Cup.
Cover Up has appeared to find the courses at Ascot and Newcastle too stiff on his latest outings when events didn’t pan out favourably, and the return to a sharper track like Goodwood should play to his strengths.
His only previous start here yielded a career best at that point of his career.
This strong traveller should have a decent pace to chase from stall 26 with Apollo One (27) and Get It (28) in close proximity by the stands’ side rail.
After only 10 starts, Cover Up is quite unexposed as sprinters go and could yet make up into a Group performer for a top team.
Selection: Cover Up
