Southampton grabbed a last-gasp winner against Watford – and then landed a knockout blow on social media.
The Saints kept their automatic promotion hopes alive when Flynn Downes scored in the ninth minute of stoppage time to earn a 3-2 victory over the Hornets.
The midfielder’s effort was controversial to say the least, not only because it came two minutes after the allocated seven minutes of injury time.
With a corner whipped into the box, West Ham loanee Downes appeared to control the ball with his hand before finding the back of the net.
Watford’s admin wasn’t best pleased by what he saw, sharing a post about the goal that read: “Goal. Southampton. Downes controls it (with what looks like his hand) and puts it past Bachmann.”
But while Watford may have had a right to feel aggrieved, they were certainly put in their place when Southampton’s admin simply replied with an image from a fixture six years earlier.
In a Premier League match between the two clubs in January 2018, Watford midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure salvaged a 90th minute equaliser for the Hornets by using his hand to put it beyond Alex McCarthy.
Sharing the image, Southampton’s post on X attracted some welcome praise from fans who loved their cheeky dig.
One fan messaged: “Justice.”
Another supporter commented: “We genuinely have the best admin,” while a third added: “And it’s all gone quiet over there.”

“Admin cooked the other admin,” said this Southampton fan, as a fifth stated: “Admin just made it 4-2!”
Southampton’s victory could have a huge impact on their hopes of securing automatic promotion.
While still sitting fourth in the table, Russell Martin’s side are now just seven points off the top two with five games remaining.
Crucially, the Saints have two games in hand on both Ipswich and Leeds, with one game in hand over Leicester.
With trips to Leicester and Leeds still to come in their remaining fixtures, victory over Watford has set up an exciting end to the Championship promotion race.
