The first quarter final of Euro 2024 sees arguably the two most impressive teams in the tournament so far go head-to-head in a hugely anticipated clash between Spain and Germany.
Spain head into their last eight clash against the tournament hosts as the only team in the competition still with a 100% record, having won all four of their games so far, which makes them marginal favourites to reach the semi final.
Luis de la Fuente’s side finished top of a tricky looking Group C which also contained the defending champions Italy and a Croatia side who have finished second and third in the last two World Cups, as well as Albania.
The three-time European champions then booked their place in Friday’s quarter final by comprehensively beating a Georgia side making their major tournament debut by a 4-1 scoreline, coming back from a goal down.
Spain have lost just one of their last 16 matches in all competitions, and head to Stuttgart to take on the host nation having now won six on the trot.
Germany had the help of a controversial VAR in their 2-0 victory over neighbours Denmark in Dortmund in their Round of 16 clash having finished top of their group in the group stage.
Julian Nagelsmann’s side kicked off Euro 2024 with an emphatic 5-1 victory over Scotland on the opening night of the tournament, and followed it up with a 2-0 win over Hungary in their second match.
Their third and final group game against Switzerland saw the three-time European champions require a 92nd minute equaliser against Switzerland to snatch a first place finish in Group A from their opponents.
Germany remain undefeated in all competitions across their eight matches in 2024, winning six, having endured a notoriously tricky 2023, in which they lost six out of 11 matches, winning just three.
There’s not much to split the head-to-head record between Spain and Germany, with the latter leading 9-8 in wins alongside nine draws.
Three of the last four meetings between the two nations have ended in a draw, including the most recent meeting in Qatar at the 2022 World Cup, though Germany have won only one of their last matches against the Spanish, which includes a 1-0 win for Spain in the final of this competition back in 2008.
