Southampton v West Brom preview
Southampton head into their play-off semi-final second leg on Friday night as favourites to reach next weekend’s Wembley final as they continue their bid to return back to the Premier League at the first attempt following their relegation last season.
The goalless draw in last weekend’s first leg leaves Friday night’s game a winner takes all affair, in which Russell Martin’s side will take a home advantage into having finished the Championship season in fourth place.
The Hampshire side got back to winning ways on the final day of the regular season having lost their last three matches, but upset the odds to win at Elland Road, contributing to spoiling Leeds’ hopes of automatic promotion.
The Saints head into their final home match of the campaign having won three of their last four at the St Mary’s Stadium and will back themselves to get the job done on Friday night and book their place at Wembley.
West Brom earned a draw in their home first leg of their Championship play-off final, meaning nothing less than a win will do as they travel to the south coast looking to return to the Premier League after spending three seasons in the second tier.
Carlos Corberan’s side have been a near-permanent fixture in the second tier’s top six this season since October, and guaranteed their place in the play-offs on the final day of the campaign, climbing above Norwich into fifth place with a 3-0 win over Preston.
That victory ended a run of three consecutive defeats, but make the trip to Southampton having generally struggled away from home this season, with only the bottom four finishers having won fewer matches on the road than the Baggies this season.
West Brom have won only one of their last nine matches against the Saints, which includes losing seven of their last eight prior to last weekend’s first leg, falling to defeat on each of their last three visits to St Mary’s.
