Some athletes spend a decade just trying to make the Olympics.
Some are in the right place at the right time, and simply know how to shine in the spotlight.
Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. has spent 52 years gradually perfecting the art of being Snoop Dogg.
But now that the D-O-double G is in Paris for the 2024 Summer Games, one of the most famous rappers in history is letting the world know how unique he is.
Dogg easily overshadowed celebrity appearances from Tom Cruise, Ariana Grande, John Legend, Anna Wintour and Larry Fitzgerald, dominating the screen on the same day that Simone Biles returned to Olympic action and made more history.
Dogg, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, was also a big hit before the Opening Ceremony on Friday and his Paris appearance isn’t a one-time, self-promotional tour.
The rap artist behind smoking 1990s hits such as “What’s My Name?” and “Gin and Juice” has been evolving for years into an Olympic force, teaming with NBC for in-person coverage and truly becoming a man of the people.
He was declared the “MVP of the Olympics” before Biles hit the mat on Sunday.
Then Dogg sat in the first row and cheered on the American gymnast up close as Biles proved that her eerie 2020 Tokyo Olympics case of the twisties was in the past.
“That man is leading the best life of any person who has ever lived,” a fan tweeted.
“Teamwork makes the dream work,” Team USA added on social media.
Dogg first made Olympic waves in 2021, when he hilariously commented on a “crip-walking horse.”
Appearing with comedian Kevin Hart, the rapper worked with NBC Universal to provide comedic commentaries on various events for streaming service Peacock during an Olympics heavily limited by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“That’s gangsta as a mother******,” Dogg said. “This horse is off the chain.”
Hart cracked up laughing while Dogg’s Olympic commentary became a big hit with a new generation of social-media savvy sports fans.
Three years later, he’s been impossible to miss at the start of the Paris Olympics.
As the 27-year-old Biles almost perfectly executed the Yuchenko double pike on the vault – the first time a woman has ever performed the move at the Olympics — a rapper officially with the last name of Broadus was a big part of the international TV coverage.
“My daughter LOVES Snoop Dogg and gets excited every time she sees him on screen,” a fan tweeted. “So please keep up the Snoop content.”
If Dogg also watches LeBron James and Team USA open its men’s basketball play against Serbia on Sunday evening, he’ll truly be a modern man of Paris.
