talkSPORT pundit and Aston Villa legend Gabby Agbonlahor was left bamboozled by Tottenham fans after their Manchester City defeat.
Tottenham’s loss to City on Tuesday night might help stop arch-rivals Arsenal from winning the league, but it has come at a price.
It is now mathematically impossible for Spurs to finish fourth, thus handing Champions League football to Aston Villa in an incredible campaign under Unai Emery.
For Villa legend Agbonlahor, who woke up this morning to the Champions League anthem, he was still left mystified by the mentality of some Tottenham fans who wanted to lose.
That included talkSPORT’s Jamie O’Hara, who wore a City shirt during a talkSPORT watch-along and cheered when Erling Haaland scored.
Agbonlahor spoke to Alan Brazil and Ally McCoist on talkSPORT Breakfast, saying live on air: “What I don’t understand, all the Spurs fans that I will see tomorrow and the rest of the year, taxi drivers that are Spurs fans and agree with Jamie O’Hara, I think it is a disgrace.
“You have still got a chance [at Champions League football]. We have still got to go to Crystal Palace where we probably would have lost, they are on fire at the moment, [Michael] Olise, [Eberechi] Eze.
“Win against Manchester City and you still have a chance, who cares about the rivalry? Who cares?
“You want to be in the top competitions. I am listening to the Champions League music this morning like, ‘Wow, I am going to be at Villa Park with Ally McCoist commentating and my team’s in the Champions League’.
“Spurs fans care about, ‘Oh we are going to stop Arsenal from winning the league’. It shows a small club mentality, small club mind frame.
“And that is why they don’t win trophies. Sums them up.”
While Tottenham’s loss might have ruled out their chances at Champions League football, in truth, they have been in shoddy form anyway.
They have won just once in their last six Premier League games, losing five and landing their sole victory over bottom-three Burnley.
City, meanwhile, have relentlessly marched from win to win and have not dropped points since March.
Their victory over Spurs saw them leapfrog Arsenal into first while they face West Ham at home on Sunday, knowing a victory will assure them a fourth title in a row.
