Scottie Scheffler ended a record-breaking run of 28 rounds under par in the worst way possible on Friday.
The world no.1 three-putted from inside six feet on the 18th green to finish his second round at the Houston Open with a double-bogey.
His second putt was from 1ft 10ins and the shocking miss meant Scheffler carded a level-par 70, putting him four-shots adrift of leader Tony Finau heading into the weekend.
Scheffler’s incredible consistency has seen him win back-to-back PGA Tour events, including the Players Championship earlier this month.
However, the American had gone 51 weeks without a win and many felt his putting was proving a damaging weakness in an otherwise sensational game.
Friday’s lapse in concentration comes amid a dramatic improvement on the greens for Scheffler, who has often fired back at the media for criticising his putting.
And when asked about the short-range miss after his round, the former Masters champion gave a sarcastic response.
“No, I do that all the time,” said Scheffler.
“You watch me a lot, that happens a lot to me. You never really know what’s going to be up there around the cup on 18.
“I felt like I hit a good putt on the first one, but the second one I guess just hit a little fast and didn’t see a spike mark there.”
Nevertheless, Scheffler remains in contention in Texas and the 27-year-old can still break a separate, long-standing Tiger Woods record.
Woods holds the record for consecutive rounds of par or better with 52 across his historic 2000 and 2001 seasons.
Scheffler’s run of 29 rounds at par or better is still in tact.
