Ted’s picks for Saturday, Lucky 15, May 19:
Find the following picks for Saturday races. Play on the races with our best expert-rated horse racing betting sites:
- Newbury 1.50 – Desert Hero – bet with bet365
- Newbury 3.35 – Poker Face each way – bet with CopyBet
- Newbury 4.10 – Gisburn each way – bet with BetMGM
- Uttoxeter 5.55 – Disco Daisy – bet with Betway
Newbury 1.50 – Desert Hero
DESERT HERO is the top rated on figures, and can confirm his superiority by landing this Group 3 prize. The 4-year-old made a pleasing return to the track, when just narrowly touched off at Sandown three weeks ago, and the William Haggas trained representative should strip fitter for that outing, as well as the return to 1m4f being a big tick in the box.
To my mind, he shaped as though stepping back up in distance would be a necessity, and so there will be no excuses from the trip-angle. There has been a bit of rain around in the Newbury area recently which will have been welcomed by connections, and if the ground did happen to turn really soft it wouldn’t be an inconvenience. Tom Marquand takes the ride and the combination look to have major claims.

Newbury 3.35 – Poker Face each way
POKER FACE has been green lighted for this assignment, and in some ways has been ‘reinvented’ back at 1m, after failing to really make a splash in some big 10f contests. Juice in the ground over 1m appears to really be his forte, and he has excelled in recent times in those particular set of circumstances.
He shaped really nicely on his comeback run in the Group 2 over 1m at Sandown recently when finishing second, and that run can be upgraded as connections suggested he would strip a lot fitter for his outing, the ground was probably on the quick side for him, and he was trying to concede 3lbs. If the forecast rain does arrive, it will be music to the ears of the Crisford team, who can run a big race with James Doyle in the saddle.

Newbury 4.10 – Gisburn each way
GISBURN blows hot and cold, but often brings his A-game to the table at this venue, and so as an each-way player, has to be respected for the team of William Buick and Richard Hannon. The 5-year-old has two course and distance victories to his name, and from a mark of 89 he is far from impossibly handicapped given that he last won off 86, but was rated 99 in his pomp.
One thing that would really benefit the gelding would be plenty of give underfoot, so any showers would be welcomed for an individual who clearly handles soft conditions better than most. It’s a wide-open looking encounter, and a bold show wouldn’t be a surprise.
Uttoxeter 5.55 – Disco Daisy
Emma Lavelle has her string in fine fettle at present, and DISCO DAISY can call the tune in this Novice Hurdle over 2m4f. After showing some smart Bumper form, she was a convincing winner on her Hurdling debut at Haydock, and can step again here. The extra distance for today’s assignment should suit, as she showed plenty of stamina at the end of her last start that was over 2m3f.
Tom Bellamy takes the ride on the 6-year-old, and they look to have an outstanding chance of following up. Any rain that arrives will not be a hindrance whatsoever, so if conditions do end up on the soft side she will be equipped to handle it.

Ted’s picks for Sunday, Lucky 15, May 18:
Stratford 2.05 – Dusky Days
DUSKY DAYS comes with risks attached, but off a career low mark of 97, he could easily get involved in proceedings here with trip and ground to suit. Gavin Sheehan and Jamie Snowden have combined to good effect over the last couple of seasons, and this lightly-raced individual could easily bounce back to form returning to the scene of his only previous triumph.
If any rain hits the track that shouldn’t be an issue, and he looks a lively contender here. His jumping wasn’t great last time out at Fontwell, but previously he showed plenty of promise when third at Hereford. He can get in the shake-up here.

Stratford 3.05 – Deerstalker
Ben Pauling and Ben Jones are represented by DEERSTALKER who shapes as though the step up to an extended 2m6f will really suit him on Chase debut. He was last seen being beaten over Hurdles on the line at this venue last month, but looks the chasing type, and can improve further now going over larger obstacles.
The first-time tongue-tie appeared to really aid his cause on his most recent spin, and as a thoroughly unexposed sort should have a lot more progression in the locker off 107 in a discipline that should really suit him. This isn’t the strongest of races, and it would be no surprise to see him score here.
