Portugal vs Republic of Ireland predictions
It is easy to read too much into matches staged in the run-up to major tournaments. That is true of both qualification campaigns and warm-up friendlies.
The Netherlands team of Johan Cruyff that dazzled at the 1974 World Cup only qualified because Belgium had a late goal wrongly disallowed in a clash between the neighbours.
Three decades or so later, Brazil scraped over the line in South American qualifying for the 2002 World Cup, which they went on to win.
On the continental stage, Germany topped a tough qualification group for Euro 2020 by winning seven of their eight games, then slumped to a disappointing last-16 exit at the tournament itself.
Pessimism abounded among French football fans ahead of the 2022 World Cup after les Bleus won only one of their six matches prior to the big kick-off in Qatar. As it was, Didier Deschamps’ team came within a penalty shoot-out of lifting the trophy.
Those examples should serve as a reminder to any Portugal supporter minded towards extreme optimism or deep despondency.
There is a danger that members of the former camp will place too much weight on Portugal’s impressive qualification campaign. Roberto Martinez’s men were the only side to amass maximum points, while they also scored the most goals (36) and conceded the fewest (two).
At the same time, there is no need to go too far in the other direction after Portugal’s 2-1 loss to Croatia at the weekend.
True, this was a wake-up call given it was the first time under Martinez that Portugal had pitted their wits against another top team. But neither baby nor bathwater should be thrown out after a narrow loss in a preparatory fixture.
What is more, Portugal have the chance to make amends (to some extent, at least) when they lock horns with the Republic of Ireland on Tuesday.
Portugal vs Republic of Ireland betting tips
The Republic of Ireland will look to cause an upset against Portugal, who are looking ahead to Euro 2024.
Portugal to win to nil – 6/5 (BetVictor)
It is even possible to argue that the Croatia defeat was a welcome reality check to remind Portugal to not get ahead of themselves. Better for such an event to take place before the tournament than during it.
Centre-back Ruben Dias used a post-match interview to send a warning message to his team-mates.
“It was a good game to come back down to earth,” he said. “No matter how much talent we have, no matter how many great individuals we have, the collective has to work and has to understand each moment of the game better. From that point of view we have a long way to go.”

The positive news is that the Republic of Ireland are not in the same class as Croatia, as evidenced by the fact that they lost every match in qualifying bar a pair of victories over minnows Gibraltar.
Ireland did beat Hungary last week, but they will struggle to repeat the feat against Portugal. With their best striker Evan Ferguson absent through injury, Ireland will find it difficult to even score at the Estadio Municipal de Aveiro.

Portugal/Portugal half-time/full-time – 10/11 (BoyleSports)
Portugal will look to make a fast start against the Republic of Ireland on Tuesday night.
That is in part because they will be looking for a morale-boosting sizable victory following the Croatia result.
It is also because, with so much competition for places, the players that start this game will be keen to make an impression ahead of their meeting with Czech Republic on June 18.
Ireland are under the interim management of John O’Shea. Despite the fact they sacked Stephen Kenny last November, the Football Association of Ireland has still not found a permanent successor.
A positive result here would boost O’Shea’s case to get the job full-time, but Ireland’s defence will find it tough to keep out Portugal in the first half. And once the hosts are ahead, it is hard to see them letting go of that lead.
⚽ Tip Portugal to be ahead at half-time and full-time at 10/11 with BoyleSports ⚽
Diogo Jota to score any time – 11/8 (Sky Bet)
Diogo Jota scored against Croatia last time out, but he did not start the game. Martinez instead went for a front four of Bernardo Silva, Bruno Fernandes, Joao Felix and Goncao Ramos.
Cristiano Ronaldo will lead the line here, but the odds on him finding the back of the net are too short to be attractive.
Instead, Jota looks like a good pick. He too will be confident of starting after beginning Saturday’s game on the bench and then coming on to make an impact.
The Liverpool forward is a versatile forward who can play on either flank or through the middle.
He is also an excellent finisher who rarely passes up a good opportunity in front of goal.
⚽ Go for Diogo Jota as an anytime scorer at 11/8 with Sky Bet ⚽
