Portugal vs France predictions
Neither Portugal nor France dazzled in the round of 16 at Euro 2024, but the most important thing is that both nations got the job done.
Portugal required a penalty shoot-out to see off a stubborn Slovenia side who exited the tournament without having lost a match. Diogo Costa was their hero, saving all three Slovenia spot-kicks to send Roberto Martinez’s men through.
France managed to get their business done within 90 minutes, although they left it late to score the winner against Belgium. A 1-0 victory came courtesy of a Jan Vertonghen own goal in what could be the centre-back’s last ever match at international level.
Despite his considerable efforts between the sticks, Costa’s name was not the one in the headlines after the Slovenia triumph.
Cristiano Ronaldo had an eventful night. He saw his penalty in extra time saved by Jan Oblak, a development which led to one of the greatest players of all time bursting into tears while the game was ongoing.
Ronaldo steadied himself sufficiently to make amends by scoring in the shoot-out, after which he sent an apologetic gesture towards the Portugal fans.
The 39-year-old was saying sorry for missing his first penalty of the game, but the bigger issue was his performance throughout the 120 minutes. At times it looked more like the Cristiano Ronaldo Show than Portugal vs Slovenia.
Martinez has a big decision to make ahead of this quarter-final. It is surely untenable to continue starting Ronaldo, who is plainly past his best. But does Martinez have the courage and authority to leave out Portugal’s greatest ever player?
Didier Deschamps will be grateful that he is not facing any such conundrum. France have not set the world alight so far in Germany, yet they continue to get the results they need to advance in major tournaments.
Will their run end on Friday, or can les Bleus set up a semi-final clash with either Spain or Germany?
Portugal vs France betting tips
Portugal and France are ready to go head-to-head for a spot in the last four of the European Championship.
France to win – 13/10 (talkSPORT BET)
Remarkably, France are yet to score from open play at Euro 2024. One of their three goals came from the penalty spot and the other two were own goals.
That does not mean they have not created chances, but this has very much been a Deschamps-style France performance to date.
The long-serving manager is not about to change his ways. Les Bleus have long left the public wanting more, but they continue to play a cautious, restrained style of football.

We saw that in action once more against Belgium, when France made shutting down the opposition attack their number one priority.
This team will not win any beauty contests, but their tried-and-tested approach may well end with captain Kylian Mbappe lifting the Henri Delaunay Trophy on July 14.
Portugal lack the same sort of unifying on-field identity, so we fancy France to come through this quarter-final.
⚽ Back France to win at 13/10 with talkSPORT BET ⚽
Under 1.5 goals – 7/4 (bet365)
The last-16 ties involving these two teams featured a grand total of one goal. We could have a similarly low-scoring encounter in store on Friday.
That does not mean this will not be an intriguing tactical battle, but France tend not to be involved in end-to-end thrillers (with the obvious exception of the 2022 World Cup final).
Portugal will likely dominate possession, but we have seen against the Czech Republic, Georgia and Slovenia that this team struggles against deep blocks.
France will not be quite as reactive as those three sides, but Deschamps will ensure their defence does not give much away.
One goal might well be enough to win this game. Alternatively, a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes would not come as a huge surprise either.

Kylian Mbappe to score any time – 7/4 (VBET)
Mbappe is yet to hit the heights Ronaldo did during his peak, but he is a far superior player in 2024.
The Real Madrid forward (his move from Paris Saint-Germain officially went through on Monday, the day of the Belgium game) has not hit top form at this tournament yet, but he showed flashes of his quality last time out. He is also getting more and more comfortable with his face mask, which took time to adjust to.
Whether he operates through the middle or from his preferred role as a left-sided forward, Mbappe provides a significant goal threat.
He will relish running behind a Portugal backline that fielded a 41-year-old Pepe at its heart for almost two hours against Slovenia.
Mbappe will also take any penalties that France are awarded on Friday, as he did with success in the 1-1 draw with Poland on matchday three of the group stage. He is the obvious choice in the anytime scorer market.
